NBA Special Report: Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose suffers a sprained wrist
Day in and day out, Derrick Rose is out there, proving to everybody in Chicago that he is the man after Michael Jordan took over the ’90s. He’s a warrior, a leader, and most importantly, the face of the franchise. He has the flair of a Kobe Bryant, the aggressiveness
of Allen Iverson, the quickness of a Dwyane Wade, the attitude of a Tim Duncan and the persistence of LeBron James.
The phenomenal guard only in his second professional year has taken the league by storm and is the key cog behind Bulls 15-8 run in the season. On Monday night though, Rose came across the harsh side of the game he so passionately adores.
Having narrowly escaped a serious wrist injury and losing against the Orlando Magic, Rose and the Bulls loyal suffered another scare as Derrick Rose suffered a series of blows on Monday night, the last one on his troubled wrist.
With 5:30 left in the game, Rose tripped, rolling his left ankle in the process as he went down in the backcourt, prompting a worried Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro to take a timeout. After a few uneasy minutes, on the bench he braved onto the court again.
The punishment however was not over yet for Rose.
With two minutes left on the clock, Rose gathered pace from the left wing, surged down the lane and soared toward the rim for layup. His drive was cut short though as he clipped when Indiana Pacers Brandon Rush who moved under him and Rose went down on the
court hard.
The Bulls guard went down nearly face first but managed to take most of the impact with his chest. It completely winded him out and with it took the collective breath from a sell-out crowd of 21,287.
The crowd roaring with “MVP MVP” chants - something that Derrick Rose has become accustomed to this season, suddenly lost its voice as he rolled on the court for several minutes holding his right wrist. The Bulls coach again took a timeout and Rose returned
again. He slipped in two free throws after that and managed to finish the match.
"I saw my whole future flash before my eyes, coming down," Rose said of the hard fall he took in the fourth quarter after the match.
"I thought it was going to be worse than that. But right now it just feels sore."
After the match, Rose sat in front of his locker room with ice packs on both knees and his wrist, while soaking his feet in a vat of ice.
The team doctors immediately carried out X-rays on his troubled wrist after the match, which later revealed out to be negative. As of now, Rose seems to have dodged the bullet again as the injury is deemed to be just a sprain, however, the athlete is expected
to be re-evaluated on Tuesday before departing for an away encounter at Toronto.
A relieved Rose said after the match.
“I thought it was going to be worse than that,” He said. “Knocked the wind out of me. Most people, when they jump that high, they usually get hurt pretty bad. Thank God I didn’t break anything, I think.”
He went on to comment on his injuries.
"That's basketball," Rose said of his injuries. "Some of the times, the games are going to be physical. And you got to be able to play through them."
The superstar though is completely aware that Tuesday is going to be a tough day for him with all the bruising.
"I know [Tuesday] is going to probably be a bad day," he said. "Especially resting, sleeping, it's going to get tight. Everything's going to get tight on my body, but [I'll] get treatment and we got to play in a couple more days."
