NBA Special: Spectacular performances from 19th March games
Eighteen franchises of National Basketball Association (NBA) brought their talents to basketball courts on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Here is the crux of some the spectacular individual performances:
Blake Griffin’s best game in more than a month
The Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin rocked to the tune of some 19,060 home fans at Staples Centre as he got his shooting touch back after a dry stretch of more than a month. The 21-year-old Griffin added game-high 30 points in Los Angeles Clipper’s 100-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition to that, he grabbed eight assists and eight rebounds.
The Big Three’s Charm
The Big Three, including LeBron “King” James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh as usual played a very vital role in the victory of Miami Heat. The prolific trio combined for a total of 73 points as Miami defeated the Denver Nuggets 103-98 at American Airlines Arena.
Forward James headed all scorers with 33 points while Wade had 32 points in the victory. The 26-year-old forward Bosh finished with his fifth consecutive double-double including 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Tony Allen’s career-high 11 rebounds
The Grizzlies guard Tony Allen dazzled the home crowd with one of his best games of the season. He contributed 19 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, six assists, and a whooping six steals as Memphis topped the Indiana Pacers 99-78 at FedEx Forum.
After the game, Allen said that he wants to put in his best for his team, “It is bigger than me. I am looking at the standings every day, seeing where we need to be. I just want to do whatever I can do to help. Whether it's passing out water, giving somebody a towel, congratulating them or giving them some advice about the previous play or the next play, I just want to be able to help in any way possible.''
Game-high 32 points by David West
In spite of another valiant effort from forward David West, who registered game-high 32 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, the New Orleans Hornets fell to the Boston Celtics, 89-85 at New Orleans Arena.
Steve Novak sparks off the bench
Steve Novak came off the bench to score 19 points and four rebounds as the NBA-leading San Antonio Spurs trounced the visiting Charlotte Bobcats 109-98 on at AT&T Center.
Wesley Matthews’ 28-point blitz
Behind the breath-taking performance by Wesley Matthews, the Portland Trail Blazers sprinted into the sixth place in the Western Conference as they topped the Philadelphia 76ers 110-101 at Rose Garden. Mr. Basketball of the state of Wisconsin, Matthews added 28 points and six rebounds for the Blazers, who have won three straight.
The 24-year-old guard said post game, "I was just knocking down open shots, really. My teammates were finding me, and I was getting open -- shooting with confidence. Just playing the game, taking what came to me. It was the three-ball tonight."
