NBA Sunday Roundup: Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs win - (Part 4)
Houston Rockets 91 – New Orleans Hornets 89
The Houston Rockets won extending their winning streak to four games by defeating the New Orleans Hornets 91-89 at the New Orleans Arena on Sunday night.
Kevin Martin came off the bench to score a game-high 33 points for the Rockets, who won their 30th game of the 2010-11 season. Guard Kyle Lowry had 18 points for Houston, who won their 14th road game of the season.
David West had 22 points, five assists and nine rebounds for New Orleans, who lost for the first time in three games. Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry each scored 13 points while Chris Paul had 12 assists for the Hornets, who lost their 26th game
of the season.
Both teams started the contest ice cold but the Hornets managed to take a 27-21 lead after the opening quarter. New Orleans built up enough of a rhythm to push the lead to 11 points early in the second quarter, taking a 55-40 advantage into the locker room.
The Hornets continued to play offensively in the third quarter. They held a double-digit lead for most of the quarter, and took a 72-62 lead into the final stanza. Trailing by 10 points after three quarters, the Rockets got off to a fast start in the fourth.
They went on a 14-2 run to take an 80-78 advantage with seven minutes left.
Willie Green had two of his free throws in the 13th minute to tie the game at 85-85. However, Hayes' three-pointer put the Rockets ahead by 88-85 with just two minutes to go in the game. Courtney Lee secured the rebound with five seconds to go,
and then made one free throw to secure the victory.
San Antonio Spurs 95 – Memphis Grizzlies 88
The San Antonio Spurs secured their 21st straight home win of the 2010-11 season with a 95-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at the AT&T Centre on Sunday night.
Manu Ginobili had one of his finest games against the Grizzlies with a season-high 35 points, as he dominated both ends of the court with his athleticism. Matt Bonner and George Hill each finished with 14 points for the Spurs, who are now at the top of the
Western Conference with 49 sizzling victories of the current season.
Zach Randolph had 24 points and 17 rebounds for Memphis, who saw their brief two-game winning streak snapped. Guard Mike Conley had 19 points while forward Darrell Arthur finished with 12 points for the Grizzlies, who lost their 28th game of the
season.
San Antonio put together a 17-2 run to take a 26-16 lead with four and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. By half time San Antonio were up by 43-35.
The Grizzlies fought hard during the third quarter to trim the deficit but a pair of three-pointers by Matt Bonner at the end of the third helped the Spurs take a 63-59 lead into the final stanza. The Spurs regained their shooting touch in the fourth quarter
as they went on a 9-3 run in the last minute to seal the victory at 95-88.
