NBA Sunday Roundup: Orlando Magic and Dallas Mavericks win - (Part 3)
The Orlando Magic extended their unbeaten run to two games with a 100-86 victory over the visiting Charlotte Bobcats at the Amway Centre on Sunday night.
Dwight Howard played well as he scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Magic, who won their 23rd home game of the 2010-11 season. Even though Howard was the leading scorer for Orlando, Coach Stan Van Gundy said he expected
more from his star player.
Gundy told reporters, "It was almost a night off for Dwight. All the fans were a little disappointed because he had a bad game. He only had 20 and 10 . . . He's raised the bar so high now that 20 and 10 in 33 minutes is sort of ho-hum. Nobody's going to
kill him for it, but nobody's going to get excited and say what great game he had."
Brandon Bass posted 17 points and Gilbert Arenas added 16 points for Orlando, who are now 38-22 during the current season. Stephen Jackson did all he could as he chipped in with a game-high 35 points for the Bobcats, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
D.J. Augustin and Boris Diaw scored 11 points each for Charlotte, who lost their 13th road game of the season. The Magic, who led by 30-28 at the end of the first quarter, went on an 11-0 run capped by three three-pointers to take a 59-51 lead
into the locker room.
Orlando continued to play offensively in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 80-69, heading into the final stanza. However, the Bobcats did not get closer than eight points throughout the fourth quarter.
Dallas Mavericks 114 – Toronto Raptors 96
The Dallas Mavericks stretched their winning streak to six games by overcoming the Toronto Raptors 114-96 at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday night.
Dirk Nowitzki played one of his best games of the season, as he scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who won their 43rd game of the current season. Shawn Marion scored 20 points while Jason Terry registered 19 points for
Dallas, who are now 43-16 during the current season.
Amir Johnson collected a team-high 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Toronto, who have lost seven of their last 10 games. DeMar DeRozan finished with 19 points while Jose Calderon added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Raptors,
who have lost 20 of the last 23 games this season.
Calderon scored eight points in the first quarter to help Toronto grab a 30-24 lead, and the Raptors held a 57-50 edge going into the break. Dallas came out strongly in the third quarter as they went on a 12-4 run to convert a seven-point half time deficit
into a 75-72 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Mavericks reeled off a 20-6 run that blew the game open and put them ahead by 17 points for good. The Raptors tried their best to get back into the game but were unable to challenge the Mavericks, who eventually held on for a 114-96
win.
