Question:

NBA Trade Question- NOT a scenario

Can an NBA team make a trade with a European team? For example, since the Bulls aren't willing to pay Ben Gordon the money he wants, he is considering going to Europe. If the Bulls want something in return, can they construct a trade with the European team and make the swap? (Ex: If Gordon chooses Spain, can the Bulls ask for Ricky Rubio in exchange? I know this will never happen, but its just an example)

  1. Money talks and if the conversations goes well then it will happen, money rules all!

  2. only if the NBA decide to expand to europe then they can officially do that, but now they can arrange private deals, for example, Euro fires a player for them to sign with bulls

  3. No.

The NBA is governed by the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) between the players union and the league. All contracts are tradable and interchangeable within the NBA League because they all adhere to the CBA.

Europe has its own players union and different legal standards. So contracts cannot be interchanged.

An example would be the trade salary rule in the NBA. This rule was agreed upon with the CBA so that trades within the NBA would have to be within 1.25 times the salary of the players being traded. This means that salaries of players being traded must be within 25% of each other (e.g. a guy making $2 million a year cannot be traded for a guy making $10 million a year). The CBA makes this rule applicable all across the NBA. If the NBA were to trade with Europe, European salaries are set differently so the whole system falls apart. Aside from the fact that the trade will be working across different currencies (Euro vs USD), European players are usually not paid as much as American players. And European leagues may not have a salary restriction like the NBA so the question becomes which set of standards should be followed.

The legal and financial problems are too much, the NBA would never make a trade with a European team.

  4. No.  Europe isn't in any kind of agreement with NBA.

  5. No the Bulls can't trade Gordon to a European team and get someone back the NBA says your not a lot to do that

Remember when Josh Childress left the NBA to go to Greece if he went to another team the Hawks could have matched that offer but since it was Greece the Hawks can't match that offer also the restricted and unrestricted agency does not work in the European leagues
