NBA Update: Amar’e Stoudemire and Russell Westbrook win Player of the Week
As play for the week wrapped up on 5th Dec, the league named Amar’e Stoudemire of the New York Knicks as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week (POW).
The Knicks are coming off with a 3-0 mark in their last week’s matches, credit of which goes to their power forward Stoudemire. Coming from Phoenix Suns, Stoudemire helped turn the Knicks’ 3-8 mark to 9-1 in the last ten games.
Scoring more than 30 points in all three games last week, Stoudemire has averaged 33.3 points along with .588 percent shooting and 11.7 rebounds. Stoudemire scored 31 points with a season high of 16 boards that led the Knicks to
their latest victory against the Toronto Raptors last night. Their recent win against the Raptors has improved their road score to seven straight games. Facing the Washington Wizards this week, the Knicks look to improve their road score to eight.
Talking to the press after thrashing the Raptors, Stoudemire said, “We're still on the way to getting better. We're going to continue to work, going to continue to watch film. We're going to stay hungry and see how good we
can be." With such passion and driving force, Stoudemire can expect more POW honours before the season is over.
Although objections were raised when the team administration signed off a five-year deal of 100 million dollars with Stoudemire, the 6ft 10’s recent performance with an added honour this week has managed to quiet all objections.
With Stoudemire honoured in the East, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook got the POW in the Western Conference. Leading the Thunders to a 3-1 mark last week, Westbrook finished off the week with 25.5 average points with
10 assists and 7.5 rebounds.
Hosted by the New Jersey Nets in their last game, the Thunder took the game into overtime. Scoring all of the team’s 12 points in the overtime, Westbrook scored 21 points in the game with a career high of 15 rebounds. The star
point guard registered double-doubles in all three wins last week.
Amongst other nominees included stars like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade from Miami Heat, Boston Celtic’s Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan from the San Antonio Spurs.
