NBA Update: Former NBA star Jalen Rose pleads guilty to DUI
On Wednesday, the former National Basketball Association (NBA) star Jalen Rose pleaded guilty to Driving under Influence (DUI). Rose, who is presently working as an NBA analyst for a sports channel, was arrested for driving a car
in intoxicated condition on March 11, 2011.
Rose was driving his car in West Bloomfield Township Michigan, when he had an accident on a snowy road at 2 pm in the morning. Although the crash was minor and no one was injured, but the on duty police officer suspected an over
dose of alcohol and asked him for an intoxication test. Rose hesitated and said as “he hadn't been drinking". After Rose showed reluctance to undergo the immediate test, the police officer took him to a local hospital where his blood tests came out positive.
The blood reports indicated an alcohol level in the blood, which was above the legal limit. The Michigan State’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, while the concentration in Rose’s blood sample was 0.088. However, even after the blood
test, a defiant Jalen Rose stuck with his initial statement and insisted that he was not drunk at the time of arrest. He said “Although I was not feeling impaired, the results of these tests indicate that my blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.”
On Wednesday though, Rose told the true story to Judge Kimberly Small, “I'm embarrassed to say I had six drinks that evening.” When the judge asked him about the size of drinks he had that particular evening. Rose replied, “I'm
embarrassed to say probably too big."
The final verdict on his offence will be declared on 27th July and he can be sentenced to prison for a maximum of 93 days. Rose will also face upto $500 fine which will include court expenses too.
Before coming into the professional league, Rose attended the University of Michigan where he led the famous “Fab Five” to two consecutive NCAA title games in 1992 and 1993. The 38 year old played for 13 years in the NBA and played
for six different teams. Rose was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1994, but he only stayed at Denver for two years and joined the Indiana Pacers in 1996. Rose then went on-to play for the Chicago Bulls in 2002 and in the very next season, he went to the Toronto
Raptors. The final two teams he played for were the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns.
