NBA Update: Golden State Warriors name Mark Jackson as their head coach
Former New York Knicks All-Star guard, Mark Jackson has been appointed as a head coach of the Golden State Warriors. The appointment comes nearly two weeks after the Oakland based franchise parted ways with Keith Smart after just one year.
This is Jackson’s first stint as a coach in NBA. Upon his appointment the 17 year NBA veteran said, “This is an incredible opportunity and I am honoured and thank God that I have been chosen to be the next coach of the Warriors.”
After a poor performance during the regular season, the Warriors decided to get rid of Smart and started their search for a head coach who could lead the team to the right path. Golden State is a team with a bevy of talent in their front court. They possess Monta Ellis, who was among the top five scorers in the league this season. Then, they have a second year do-all guard Stephen Curry who making his marks with each passing day. The Warriors have a prolific long range shooter in the form of Dorrell Wright and consistent double-double threat in the shape of David Lee. However, their defence during the season was not up to the mark and time and again they lost game just due their weaknesses at the back. They ended the season at 26th in defensive efficiency and were also among the worst rebounding leagues in the league.
The Warriors need a defence minded coach to grasp the reigns and there search took them to the former NBA player, who has been trying to become a head coach for some time and has interviewed for many jobs during the last few years.
The Warriors General Manager Larry Riley showed full confidence in Jackson’s ability to lead the team to the right direction and said on Monday, “After an extensive search and a great deal of consideration, we have come to the conclusion that Mark Jackson is the best coach for this team.” "We were looking for a coach with leadership ability and a strong personality and believe Mark possesses those qualities. He's very well respected in NBA circles, is a consummate professional and his knowledge and background will be an incredible asset for our team and organization."
He entered in to the NBA in 1987 and retired from the organization in 2004. During his well travelled 17-year career, he played for the New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, and Houston Rockets at point guard position. He was selected as an All-Star in 1989. Prior to his appointment as a head coach, Jackson was working as an NBA analyst.
