NBA Update: LeBron James and Monta Ellis bag POW honours
With not many matches during the week of 20th Dec to 26th Dec, only a few players were nominated for the league’s Player of the Week (POW) honour. The nominees included Chicago Bulls’ Carlos Boozer, Dallas
Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki, Miami Heat’s LeBron James, Golden State Warriors Monta Ellis, New York Knicks Amar'e Stoudemire and Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant.
As expected, the winner in the Eastern Conference was James. James averaged 27.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.0 assist and 2.3 steals for the week to lead the Heat to a 2-1 mark for the week.
Heat got off to a shaky start last Monday with a home loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Scoring 19 points with ten rebounds and seven assists, James was unable to prevent a 98-96 defeat. “King James”, however, returned to form last
Thursday. Scoring a season high of 36 points with six rebounds and four assists, James was able to help secure a 95-83 win over the Phoenix Suns. James’ most commendable performance for the week came on Christmas Eve when he posted a triple double for the
evening against the Los Angeles Lakers. With 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, James led the Heat to a 96-80 win over the Lakers.
Nabbing the POW honour in the Western Conference is Ellis from the Warriors. Topping 36 points in each game throughout the week, along with 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals, Ellis led the Warriors to cap off the week with a 2-1 win loss
mark.
Like the Heat, the Warriors too got off on the wrong foot losing their opening match to the Houston Rockets last Monday. Although Ellis registered an impressive 44 points with seven assists and three steals, he was unable to secure
a win for the Warriors. Their next matchup of the week came on Tuesday when they visited Sacramento to take on the Kings. With 36 points, seven assists and four steals, Ellis was able to secure a 121-112 win for the Warriors. Ellis continued his form into
Christmas Eve, when the Warriors took on the Portland Trail Blazers. Ellis’s 39 points with seven assists and two steals played a major role in the Warriors’ 109-102 win.
