NBA announces All Rookie 1st and 2nd Teams for the 2011-2012 season
The NBA today announced the 2011-2012 All Rookie First Team, with Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving and Ricky Rubio leading the voting. Irving was the only player on the team who was selected unanimously.
The selection was done by the coaches of the 30 NBA teams and they were asked to select 5 players for the First team and Five players for the second team. Each first team vote was worth 2 points and each 2nd team vote
was worth 1 point. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players in their teams.
Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers finished with the most number of points at 58, while Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves finished 2nd place with 49 points. Denver Nuggets power forward Kenneth Faried had 46 points
for third place and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors finished fourth with 43 points.
There was a tie for fifth place between Iman Shumpert of the New York Knicks, Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs and Brandon Knight of the Detriot Pistons. They all scored 40 points each.
Irving was the top scoring rookie of the season and won the Eastern Conference Rookie of the month for the months of December/January, February and March. He averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Ricky Rubio played only 41 games in his injury shortened first season and was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December/January. He averaged 10.6 points, 4.2 rebound and rookie best figures of 8.2 assists and 2.2
steals per game.
Kenneth Faried had a monster first year as he became the regular rebounder for the Denver Nuggets and a critical part of their team strategy early on. He was the Western Conference Rookie of the month for April. He averaged 10.2
points and a rookie best 7.7 rebounds per game. Klay Thompson of the Warriors averaged 12.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2 assists for his first season.
The fifth place saw a tie between Shmupert, Leonard and Knight. Shumpert scored 9.5 points, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals as the point guard for the New York Knicks. Leonard is a regular starter for the powerful Spurs, and has averaged
7.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.1 assists per game in the regular season in his first NBA year. He is also contributing for the Spurs in the playoffs. Knight had 12.8 points, 3.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds as a member of the Piston squad for his
first year.
The panel also selected the All Rookie 2nd Team for the year 2011-2012, which included Chandler Parsons of the Houston Rockets with 33 points, Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings with 27 points and MarShon Brooks of
the New Jersey Nets with 18 points.
The other two slots went to Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves with 16 points and Tristan Thompson of the Cleveland Cavaliers with 16 points. The selections were made regardless of the positions of the players in the
team.
