NBA legend Allen Iverson interested in joining Boston Celtics – NBA Update
Currently unemployed former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson is reportedly interested in joining Boston Celtics next season.
The former Philadelphia 76ers livewire has long since declared his intention to make a comeback in the NBA and it appears that Boston could be his destination of choice.
Iverson is one of the most iconic players the league has ever seen, but he had a career marred by controversy and attitude problems. In fact, it was the off court issues that forced him out of the NBA with no franchise willing
to have such a disruptive player on their roster, despite him being a former MVP.
Now that Iverson is back in the country and looking to get back into the NBA, he sees Boston as the place to restart his career. His manager Gary Moore recently told Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.
He argued that Iverson like Boston head coach Doc Rivers a lot and the presence of former Celtics player Danny Ainge in the front office could also prove to be helpful.
“Boston is particularly attractive to [Iverson] because of Danny Ainge, the organization, and one of the most respected coaches he knows in the business in Doc Rivers,”
“He has the utmost respect for Doc Rivers and the current roster of players. Allen would relish the opportunity to play in that organization.’’
Of all the teams in the NBA, the Boston Celtics could be the one most well equipped to handle Iverson. The Celtics have a very close knit and disciplined unit marshalled over not only by the coaching staff, but also by legendary
players such as Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
The senior members of the locker room have enough about them to control the versatile Iverson and make him fall in line. Not that Iverson would need too much of that.
The former MVP has pledged to be on his best behaviour and promised that he is a changed man. He had a very tumultuous year away from the NBA, with limited playing time in Turkish club Besiktas as well as injuries. The experience,
according to Iverson, has taught him a lesson he will not soon forget.
The Celtics could also use someone like Iverson at the moment. They only have 6 players under contract for next season; however three of them are Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen. The Big Three will take up most of Boston’s salary
cap by themselves, which means bargain buys like Iverson would be a welcome addition.
He can also give Rajon Rondo some breathing space at the point guard position and perhaps add another dimension to the Boston offence that looked stale at times last season.
