NBA mystery - Why Allen Iverson cannot join the Holy Trio!
There have been a lot of speculations regarding Allen Iverson joining the Miami Heat. Allen might be an 11 time All-Star player, 4 time scoring champion and might have been considered NBA’s most Valued Player in 2001, but all that does not change the fact who Allen was and is. Experts say Iverson’s role in Miami is never likely to happen, here is why;
Iverson is against practicing which every coach is determined on when it comes to his players. He has told numerous coaches that he does not believe in practice sessions, instead he likes to go on the court and give all that he has. Regardless of the fact the player was getting paid over $20 million last season, so why should he attend practice? This could very well go against Allen Iverson as the Miami Heat Coach Pat Riley is all about practice as he once said “A champion needs motivation above and beyond winning.”
The second factor that experts have been talking about is Allen’s personality. Allen’s ego is as big as Hitler’s, he never seems to find anything wrong about himself, yet somehow he fails to realize the fact he has not won an MVP award over the past decade after his first. Will he sacrifice his stardom for the three young super stars in Miami, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh?
Allen is 35 and has slowed down over the years. Experts say to even think about the fact that he can share his spotlight and co-exist with another is like saying the world is flat. Iverson is not a person who will sit in the locker room quietly all night and be okay about taking a pay cut in order to support the team, like the three did.
One of the biggest issues is Allen Iverson’s past. Off the court he had been into a lot of drama even before joining the NBA. Thinking from Pat Riley’s perspective experts say there is no way on earth Pat will want an ex-convict in his locker room. The first time Iverson got arrested was in 1993 due to some racial tension; he was initially sentenced to serve five years in jail but later on the charges were dropped.
The second time he was arrested in 1997 for possession of marijuana and firearms, but miraculously the conviction was overturned. Since 2000 he has had several brawls, and is banned from many night clubs and casinos in Detroit.
Pat Riley eradicated any chance of another point guard joining the team after contracting Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo. This is another reason that proves the fact that Miami is not interested in Allen, because if you look at Pat Riley’s thought process he had planned long ago who he wanted to land on the team, if the coach had any interest in Allen he would have certainly showed it long time ago.
Will Allen sit on the bench and cheer for his teammates? Experts argue the fact that Allen will never sit on the bench for more than 20 minutes straight, he is a striving player and wants to get on the court and perform. So thinking that Allen will give up on-court minutes and applaud for his teammates is out of question. With Chalmers taking around 40 minutes per game which he does each year, and with Dwyane and LeBron working their way through the game is not something Allen will abide to.
Allen Iverson no doubt is one of the best players that came to the NBA, despite his superiority complex and his rugged past he has given the league his best he could. He might still be without a championship ring but no one can deny the fact he played a major part in revolutionizing basketball, standing at only 6 feet he played around the tallest players and always remained triumphant.
However that does not change the fact he is 35 years of age and the league has much more to offer. Seeing Iverson actually play for the Miami Heat will be a dream come true for many because who does not want a team to be filled with the best athletes and watch them bring down other teams, but that is not likely to happen, clearly because of Allen’s narcissistic-pompous personality.
