NBA point guards from whom Derrick Rose could learn to become a complete player - Part 1
Before he even graced the NBA court, Derrick Rose was a star.
Having won two state championships at school level, he was classified as one of the best point guards in the country by his peers. After taking University of Memphis Tigers into the NCAA finals in 2008, he declared himself for
the NBA draft and was selected by Chicago Bulls.
As was expected, Derrick proved to be a sensation and managed to grab the Rookie of the year award after scoring 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
His sophomore year commenced on an awful note when he injured his knee in the very first game of the season and was forced out of the remaining preseason games. However, after his knee healed by the mid of season completely, he
emerged as a much augmented player and continued improving his stats. By the end of season, his average was 20.8 points per game.
Third year was even more fruitful and he went on to winning the MVP after his breath taking performances throughout. Because of him, Bulls managed to end with an outstanding 62-20 record.
In three seasons so far, Derrick has already mounted to one of the prime point guards in the league. However, there is still something about his game that he needs to work on that will make him one of the best point guards in the
history of NBA.
Four such players, whose skills Rose can adopt to enhance his game even further are:
Isiah Thomas:
Without the slightest of ambiguities, Isiah is one of the best scoring and passing point guards of all time. He led his team Detroit Pistons to two consecutive championship titles in 1988-89 and 1990-91 because of his all round
abilities as a player.
Not only was he a consistent scorer, but was one of elite passers in the league too and that is what Derrick should try and learn to do. His scoring ability is equal to one of the best in business and to be fair, his passing isn’t
that bad either. However, if he manages to augment his passing, he might end up as one of the best players in NBA’s history.
Gary Payton:
Gary Payton, the only point guard in the history ever to be awarded an NBA defensive player of the year accolade. Payton is considered as one of the finest players in the position he played for the teams he represented in his long
seventeen years career. Payton because of his outstanding defensive skills was nicked as “The glove”
Although Derrick is still young and with time, his game is definitely going to get better but, if he manages to acquire even a percentage of Payton’s defensive skills in the next two-three seasons, it will do Chicago Bulls, already
blessed with fibrous defense a world of good.
