NBA point guards from whom Derrick Rose could learn to become a complete player - Part 2
Jason Kidd:
The 38 year old veteran from Dallas Mavericks might be retiring after this season. In his seventeen extraordinary years, Kidd has been the part of some of the most excruciating games in NBA’s history.
Started his career with Dallas Mavericks in 1994 and by the end of season, he had managed to impress everyone with his all round abilities. Though he was a consistent scorer throughout the league, it was his passing that earned
him the recognition of an elite player.
With time, his game improved and in a period of 5-6 years, he had successfully established himself as one of the best point guards in NBA. Throughout his career, he has been a consistent triple-double threat and no wonder he is
in the third place all-time for regular season triple-doubles in NBA.
Although his best days are behind him now, but he still is a massive threat for any team in the court. In his first years, he was strong on the offense just like Derrick Rose. His weak defense was exposed when he was bent to contribute
in the half court offense. How he enhanced his game in coming years was not by only bossing the ball, but instead he did it by learning to distribute the ball.
Kidd is easily one of the hardest working players in the history of the league. He was not a naturally gifted player like Kevin Durant or Michal Jordan but he had the commitment which helped him reached this height.
His three-point shooting was ordinary throughout his career. But he worked on it in the off seasons and the result was that he managed to improve the percentage of three-pointers from 27 percent to 40 percent in just 2-3 years.
Derrick should watch his videos and try to develop a consistent catch and shoot jump shot. If he manages to learn it, not only stats would go up further but he will become a mighty threat in the court.
Magic Johnson:
It will be a crime to not mention Magic Johnson when talking about elite point guards in NBA because he easily is the best point guards in the history of NBA.
Before him, point guards were looked as supporters who would help the offense in scoring but Magic changed the definition of point guards. Easily the most versatile and dominant players on the court, Johnson had the ability to
create passes at will.
Derrick Rose might never reach the standard that Magic Johnson set for point guards, however if he learns to pass the ball like him, one thing is obvious, he will definitely acquire the position of second best point guards in history.
It is often seen when Derrick is crowded, he loses the ball. Imagine what wonders he can perform if his passing skills become somewhat like Johnson.
