NBA revokes a technical foul against Dallas Mavericks' Tyson Chandler once again
Tyson Chandler was slapped with a technical in game-1. The very next day it was revoked. He was awarded a technical in game-3 as well and after the game, the Dallas Mavericks again asked the National Basketball Association (NBA) to review the technical foul awarded to their big man. And for a second time within a week the NBA came to the same conclusion: it wasn't a technical after all.
Tyson was slapped with a technical after he had apparently elbowed Oklahoma City’s James Harden during the third quarter of the game. The incident took place with 4:43 left in the third period. Tyson was marking Harden, who had blown the Mavs apart in the last game. During the scuffle, the 28-year-old Chandler raised his arms with the ball in his hands and his elbow grazed Harden’s face, who went hard on the floor. The game officials immediately intervened to control the situation and subsequently called the technical on Tyson.
Tyson’s right elbow appeared to have a minimal contact with Harden’s face however James dwelled on the court with his hands over his face for several seconds. Harden did not require any medical attention and stayed on the court to continue the game.
On Sunday, before the teams’ practice session, Tyson had defended his actions, "It was not a vicious elbow. I did not throw an elbow. I was trying to take the ball out of bounds. He tried to initiate contact and did a good job of flopping. He did a good job because he got me a technical and he got his team a point for it. That's the case with a lot of them. They run into you, do little things. Whether you react or don't react, it seems that you kind of get caught up in the situation. It's our job just to stay away from it all. You come here to play basketball. You don't come here for the sideshow."
After reviewing the incident, the NBA office however concurred with the Dallas Mavericks’ contention that James exaggerated the contact. The collision was articulated as incidental and not unsportsmanlike by the league office on Sunday upon further review.
This post-season, Tyson has had 3 technical fouls that do not include the two that have been revoked by the league in the series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to the rules of NBA, a player must be suspended for one game on getting seven technical fouls during the post-season.
The first technical that was rescinded against Chandler occurred in the game 1 of theConference final series when the Thunder’s centre Kendrick Perkins and Tyson were called for double technical. However, ruling came from the league next day that Tyson’s action did not merit a foul that can be given a technical.
