NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki backs Munich’s bid for 2018 Winter Olympics
Dirk Nowitzki, NBA superstar and current League Champion, has effectively increased the morale of Munich by throwing his support behind the cities bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
This new development has taken place after all candidate cities have made their final presentation to the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and has brought up the number of supporters of the Olympics in Germany to 78 percent.
The other two cities that are hoping to secure themselves the honour of hosting the prestigious international event in 2018 are Annecy, France and Pyeongchang, South Korea. According to Bidindex, it is Pyeongchang that is reigning in the top position as
the most likely candidate that will secure the Olympics games with Munich in second while Annecy is trailing behind the two.
With all the three cities having had their final say in the bidding process, the final decision on the host city will be revealed in Durban, South Africa on the 6th of July at midnight.
Thomas Bach, who is a vice president of the IOC as well as an official of Germany’s Olympics made the following statement of his country’s chances of securing the top spot: "We feel that we can win. But we are sportsmen enough to realize that on the given
day someone else might be better."
In case Munich is successful in winning the bid for the 2018 Olympics, it will become the first city in the history of the event to be able to play host to both the Winter as well as the Summer Olympic Games. The bid that Munich has made centers on making
use of the 1972 Olympics Park. The city plans to hold both the opening as well as the closing ceremonies at the historic venue. Not only that, it plans to make use of old as well as new venues to make the 2018 Olympics Games an experience to remember.
Other than that, Munich has the necessary infrastructure as well as a significant hotel industry to support the huge influx of people that is expected with the Olympic Games.
