NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Day two
Day two of the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship is set to commence at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. University of Texas has a lead of three points over Stanford Universitsy after day one of the
event and the defending champions are likely to maintain their lead as the event proceeds.
The first meet of the event will be the heats of the 200-yard medley relay, where the Cal Berkeley team is the hot favourite with a seed time of 1:23.92 minutes. The second fastest qualification is expected from University of Florida, as it has a time of
1:24.94 minutes. Michigan is on the third favourite spot with a time of 1:25.39 minutes.
Next is the 400-yard Individual Medley (IM), in which four heats will be conducted to identify the top eight swimmers to qualify for the finals. Florida’s Dwyer Conor is the top favourite to qualify as the fastest swimmer into the finals, with his seed time
of 3:37.75 minutes. His time is comfortably ahead of Kyle Whitaker of Michigan, who has a time of 3:41.06 minutes and Tyler Harris of UNC, who has a time of 3:41.51 minutes.
In the 100-yard butterfly event, six preliminary rounds will to take place to classify the fastest eight swimmers for the final. Stanford’s Austin Staab is expected to be the fastest among the 48 swimmers, with his time of 44.66 seconds. His time is slightly
ahead of Cal Berkeley’s Tom Shields, who has a seed time of 44.78 seconds. Michigan’s Sean Fletcher is projected to qualify as the third fastest swimmer, as he has a time of 45.69 seconds.
In the 200-yard freestyle category, there will be seven heats involving 56 swimmers to compete for the top eight freestyle finalists. Tennessee’s Ryan Harrison is the favourite of the arena in a time of 1:32.38 minutes, against Virginia’s Scott Robison,
who has a time of 1:32.52 minutes. Florida’s Brett Fraser is expected to be the third fastest contender, as he posted a time of 1:32.60 minutes.
The 100-yard breast-stroke will face five heats consisting of 35 swimmers, who will battle each other to find a place in the top eight swimmers. Cal Berkeley’s senior Damir Dugonjic is the most furious of all in a seed time of 51.88 seconds. His time places
him ahead of his team-mate, Cal Berkeley’s junior Nolan Koon and another senior, Martti Aljand, who are expected to finish second and third in a time of 52.54 and 52.74 seconds, respectively.
The 100-yard backstroke has five preliminary rounds, where 40 swimmers will race each other to qualify for the final. Indiana’s Eric Ress is the most favourite swimmer to qualify as the fastest into the finals, as he clocked a time of 45.11 seconds. His
time is only a touch away from Florida’s Marco Loughran and Auburn University’s Tony Cox, who have a seed time of 45.61 and 45.72 seconds, respectively.
The last event of the morning session will be the time finals of the 800-yard freestyle relay. The event will be completed under two preliminary rounds and will involve 16 teams. Florida team is the most favourite to conquer the title with their time of
6:16.39 minutes. Virginia’s squad is not far behind Florida, as they are the hot favourites to secure the second spot on the podium, in a time of 6:16.75 minutes. They are followed by Stanford’s team for the third place in a time of 6:19.10 minutes.
