The Nebraska Huskers gained a memorable victory over the Auburn Tigers by winning all three sets in a row in the second round of the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament.
The match took place in the University of Nebraska at Friday night at the Nebraska Coliseum. The scores for each set were 25-10, 25-17, 25-15. This was Nebraska’s tenth straight sweep.
The Head Coach of Nebraska, John Cook said that it was the sort of match they had all been willing to play. He added: "Last night was a good one to get through but tonight was a match I felt like our team was dialed in and ready to go and did a nice job
defensively against Auburn. We talk about suffocating teams and I think they felt suffocated tonight."
The Auburn Tigers have had a successful season this year so far and it was the first time that the Auburn team squad was selected to be a part of the 64 participating teams for the NCAA Volleyball Tournament 2010. Auburn Coach Wade Benson admitted that it
was a tough way for the Tigers to go out of the tournament but he was not disappointed in the team.
The first set of the match was dominated by Nebraska that scored 12 straight points, compliments of Sydney Anderson’s excellent serving and superior net play of Mueller. Nebraska made only two errors and had 10 kills in the set as opposed to nine errors
made by the Tigers and only five kills.
The second set was also dominated by the Huskers as they were able to take a 7-2 lead early in the match that went up to 12-6. Again, superior play was shown by Nebraska by having 12 kills and three errors only. Auburn was not able to match this and made
9 kills accompanied by eight errors.
Auburn was able to put up a fight in the third set by taking a lead for the first time at 9-8. They were able to maintain it till 12-10, when Nebraska broke through the lead and went on to finish the match lead by three kills of Jordan Wilberger.
Tara Mueller of the Nebraska Huskers, who was playing her final game, commented: "Tonight we went out and trusted our training. We didn't think. Everyone went out and played their part. We were playing the way Nebraska volleyball should be played."
Tara Mueller made seven kills and a pair of aces at the end of the match.
The Nebraska Huskers have moved forward to the Seattle Regional to be held on Friday, 10 December.
