NCAA top 25 week five
The fifth week of college football play was exciting and although there are still several teams with unbeaten records, the first week of conference play provided the NCAA fan with a number of impressive and exciting story lines.
Top five
The top five squads in the country did not change after week five. However, a couple teams did swap positions. Alabama maintained their number one spot with an impressive win over Florida on the weekend, while number two still belongs to Ohio State. Oregon
leapfrogged Boise State into third position, as TCU continues to round out the bunch in fifth spot.
6-10
The rankings experience a great deal of change between the six-to-10 range. Oklahoma took over the sixth spot with a win over Texas in the Red River Rivalry game. Oklahoma’s jump bumped Nebraska down to seventh, while Auburn fills in the Sooners old spot
at number eight. The ninth spot now belongs to Arizona, while 10th place now belongs to Utah.
11-15
The 11-15 range also underwent a great deal of change after week-five play, as LSU is the only remaining team from a week ago. The 11th position now belongs to Arkansas, who is followed by LSU. The 13th spot is held by Miami (FL) after
they managed a big win over Clemson on the weekend. Miami is followed by Florida who dropped from seventh spot after suffering a loss to Alabama. The top 15 gets rounded out by Iowa who slid up two spots with a win over Penn State in week five.
16-20
The changes did not stop at 15, but instead continue down the rankings and therefore the 16-20 range also saw a great deal of change after a week of conference play. The category is started off with Stanford in the 16 spot, having dropped all the way from
9th because of their loss to Oregon over the weekend. Following Stanford is Michigan State, who completed an upset over Wisconsin last week and jumped seven spots. Michigan earned an 18th place ranking after they defeated Indiana on Saturday.
In 19th is South Carolina, who was replaced in 20th with Wisconsin.
21-25
The 21-25 range went through several exciting changes after week five, as a number of new teams earned their way into the rankings. Nevada continues to roll and moved up to the 21 spot this week after winning their fifth straight game of the season. Oklahoma
State was also able to burst into the Top 25 and is now sitting in 22nd after a win over Texas A&M. Florida State also got back into the rankings after being bumped out in the first week of the season. Missouri finally garnered recognition for their
fine season, currently sitting at 4-0. Finally the Top 25 is rounded out by Air Force, who defeated Navy on Saturday.
The rankings lost USC, Texas and Penn State this week. USC was dropped after they lost by one point to Washington. Meanwhile, Texas extended their losing streak to two games, suffering a defeat in one of the biggest games of the year against Oklahoma. Penn
State was also downed by a rival, losing big to Iowa, 24-3.
Several other clubs earned votes this week, but were just shy of earning a Top 25 ranking. West Virginia is still believed by many to be one of the nation’s top clubs after being bounced from the rankings last week, after losing to LSU. In addition to West
Virginia, a case has also been made for both Kansas State, who sits at 4-0 and is first in the Big 12 standings and Northwestern, as they continue to surprise with a perfect 5-0 record.
