NCAA week five rankings see some shake-ups
With several ranked college football sides going up against one another in week four, the rankings were bound to change heading into week five. The head-to-head match-ups between ranked clubs and a major upset in Texas was enough to alter the Top 25 this week.
Top five
The top five remained the same for the most part, with the only changes coming at the four and five positions. Alabama still sits in first, followed by Ohio State in second and Boise State in third. Meanwhile, Oregon took over fourth spot, after a win over
Arizona State, which bumps TCU to fifth.
6-10
The 6-10 range saw a great deal of change after an exciting week four. Nebraska still holds on to sixth spot after a hard fought victory over South Dakota State. Florida jumps from ninth to seventh after an impressive win over the University of Kentucky, while
Oklahoma holds on to their eight place ranking. The top ten is then rounded out by Stanford and Auburn, who both pushed past tough opponents to jump in the rankings.
11-15
The third portion of the rankings did not see a great deal of change as most of the clubs had solid weeks. Wisconsin held onto 11th spot with a massive 70 point output against Austin Peay on Saturday. LSU was able to climb the ladder, jumping to 12th spot.
Meanwhile, Utah and Arizona remained in the 13 and 14 spots respectively. The top 15 is rounded out by Arkansas who suffered a tough four-point loss to Alabama at home over the weekend.
16-20
The 16-20 range went through a multitude of changes after week four and now sees Miami in the 16th spot, after jumping from 19th win an easy win over Pittsburgh on Thursday. Iowa was able to push up a spot to 17th, after getting back on track with a win over
Ball State. USC and Michigan were both able to make some headway as the Trojans climbed from 20th to 18th and the Wolverines moveed up to 19th from 21st. The top 20 is rounded out by South Carolina, who dropped out of 12th after suffering a loss to Auburn.
21-25
The bottom five also saw some movement as Texas barrelled down rankings from seventh to 21st after losing to UCLA in the upset of the week on Saturday. Penn State continues to slowly improve, moving up a spot to 22nd after a win over Temple. North Carolina
State broke the Top 25 with an impressive win on the road at Georgia Tech on Saturday. Meanwhile Michigan State clawed their way up one spot to 24th overall, after defeating Northern Colorado. The Top 25 is rounded out by new arrival Nevada, who cruised past
Brigham Young.
The introduction of Nevada and North Carolina State to the Top 25 meant that West Virginia and Oregon State were dropped from the rankings. The Mountaineers suffered a tough loss to LSU while the Beavers were victim of strong play from Boise State over the
weekend.
Other clubs who got votes for the Top 25 were Florida State, who shutout Wake Forest over the weekend, as the Seminoles continue to try and play their way back into the rankings. Missouri also got several votes after winning their fourth straight game over
Miami (OH). Nevertheless, the Tigers have yet to face a difficult opponent and will have to wait until they see #8 Oklahoma in mid-October. Kansas State also earned several votes, but like Missouri have yet to play any one of consequence this season. However,
the Wildcats will get their chance at an upset when they take on #6 Nebraska in week five.
