what should i do?

Me and my friend went to a stable...nice wonderful place.

WE found a little pony named Peanut...totally adorable and cute, 22 years old, foster horse. He's just there as a companion...no one ever grooms him or anything, we did...we're allowed to come more often now, we want to get him into good shape, any advice?

we'll probably fix his stall, there was almost no shaving and lots of manure, i feel so bad!

This pony Peanut is so cute...please help me help him...

  1. If he is 22 then he isnt all that old hes still got a good ten years.

I know some one whos mare is having a foal at 22. Well she already foaled adorable little baby! and is he going to be BIG!

any way. Ride him a little bit everyday. Make sure he is ok with riding. other wise ground training then riding.

Just work with him everyday, and take care of him.

    best of luck

  2. Give him lots of attention and teach him stuff. Try driving him. As you are teaching him your bond will grow and he will love the attention. Its great you want to help him. Oh and dont think that he is to old my friend has a 30+ year old pony  and he  has tons of pep. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  3. I would have a vet come over ( if you can afford it) and see if this pony has any unseen health issues. I would give it a bath just to get him perfectly clean. Maybe you should also start ground training and train the  pony for riding so they could have another lesson pony! you are doing great, and you a great person to take care of an abandoned animal. Good Luck! :)

  4. He'll probably appreciate just being groomed often and having a clean area to live!  He might also like to get out and go for a walk with you guys and 'see the sights'.  If turnout for a few hours a day is an option, he'd probably love that, too!   Thanks for taking an interest in the poor little guy.  In college I worked at a boarding stable for a while feeding, mucking stalls and doing grounds maintenance.  We had a similar horse there, who was close to 30, hadn't been groomed in months, and her owners never came to visit because seeing her 'made them sad'.  I started staying after work each day, brought my grooming bucket and groomed her daily, gave her the first bath she'd had in forever, and just spent some time with her, got her out of the stall and walked her around, let her nibble on some grass, etc.  She seemed to really just appreciate any little bit of attention and extra comfort.  Good luck!

  5. Take him for little walks =P

set up some poles and do little obstacles with them like go around standards, and since theres two of you. You guys can compete and see who gets the best time, That should be fun for all of you and get your pony in shape. To fix up his stall maybe buy him like a hanging toy =)

    Hope this helps

GOOD luck, your doing a really nice thing =)

  6. Good on you!! this pony is lucky to have you

sort out his stall and give him a nice clean bed,  so he can have a lie down without getting covered in maure,

groom him regularly, he will love it, as he is very old, take him for walks this will help to keep him supple and make old age more interesting for him,

also keep an eye on his weight and condidition, if he looses weight suddenly, his feed may need to be changed or the dentist may be needed to sort out his teeth and make sure his feet are keep in good order

Im sure you'll be fine and well done!!

  7. aaawwwww! how cute and how nice of u guys!

i would keep goin over there and grooming him, building trust and stuff. then ask if u could take him out a little, just on walks then exercise and stuff. if he is 22 and a companioin mayb there is somethin wrong but talk to the person find out information on him and see wat u guys can work out.

    good luck!!! : D

  8. What a nice thing to do!

    How are his feet?  Vaccinations/teeth?

I ask, because those are important parts of his care.  Ask the barn owner if you could have a bake sale, or a poo fling (you clean out others' stalls for a small fee) as a benefit to raise the $ for his farrier/vet, if that isn't being done already.

Keeping his stall nice, taking him out and grooming him, and just spending time with him are all wonderful ways to spend time with Peanut.  Fun for you and him both.

  9. Give him good food.

Show him love.Rest will be okay.

    Good job done by you.

  10. Sounds like your on the right track already. Clean his living area out, clean him up ect and he'll be much happier. I assume since you say he's at a "nice wonderful place" that's being generally well cared for and fed properly, just basically ignored?

If that's the case he'll probably appreciate some time out of the stall. Just take him for walks, let him graze in the pasture. Give him a friend and plenty of attention.

At 22 he's not that old especially for a pony. I've personally had ponies live up into their late 30's, currently still have two retired ponies one is 31 and the other 35, both are still sound just retired due to no one the right size to ride them any longer.

As long as he doesn't have any issues there's no reason he couldn't have a job to keep him occupied and give him exercise. Try teaching him to drive, it's lots fun for both you and the pony and since he'd not be carrying weight it would be much easier on his joints than riding.

Good luck and Kudos to you and your friend for seeing him and taking an interest.

  11. sounds like you got it all under control!!

  12. You cleaning out his stall on a daily basis and giving him a grooming is just what Peanut needs. Give him the odd carrot now and again and take him out for a walk from time to time and he'll be totally stoked!!!

Way to go you two, well done!!!

  13. So what do you need advice about?

seems to me like you have everything under control.

    keep doin what your doin!

  14. i love horses and what you need to do is gradually work him if you are wanting to ride him or even lead him halter train him lead him around for a few minutes every day and earn his trust  if you plan on riding him get him used to the saddle and bride and just walk him around then in two weeks or so ride him at a walk for a week or two them gain speed and go with that gait for a week or two and also if nobody takes care of him water him every day and let him graze all the time.

  15. Just keep coming and grooming him :).  Fixing his stall is a good idea.  He should have 6-8 inches of shavings or straw as bedding, and manure should be scooped out every day, and the bedding should be replaced every month.  Give him some work to do, lead him behind your horse or walk him through a trail type course.  You can also teach him to pivot and disengage his hindquarters, if you want.  Give him lots of love and attention:)
