joe has $5.15 in nickels. if he has $7.90 in total how many quarters does he have?

  1. Assuming that all he doesn't have in nickels he has in quarters, he has 7.90-5.15=2.75 in quarters.

    Joe has x quarters.

    0.25*x = 7.90 - 5.15

    <=> 0.25*x = 2.75

    <=> x = 2.75 / 0.25

    <=> x = 11

    Joe has 11 quarters. (Again, assuming that all he doesn't have in nickels he has in quarters)


  2. You cannot do this unless you assume that there are only nickels and quarters.   If this is so, then   7.90 = 5.15 + 0.25X

  3. I am assuming the rest of the money besides the $5.15 is quarters.

    5.15 + 0.25x = 7.90

    "x" being the number of quarters
