Why would we want to know where recharge areas are and map them?

I am not a student I am just writing an article for practice and need to know this.

  1. I would say more to protect aquifers rather than trace pollution.  Pollutants can enter an aquifer through recharge areas so this is one reason to project them.  Also, this is the area where water enters the aquifer.  If it is damaged (paved over or developed), the aquifer won't receive any more water.

We need to map them to know where they are so we can protect them.

  2. So that pollution can be traced.  If one of the recharge areas is underneath a farm field or a gas station the chances are that the pollution will leak through the soil and into the aquifer.  Since an aquifer is a drinking water source, one with little or no purification, this could be very harmful to anyone who drinks it.

The mapping aspect lets you see where the pollution is coming from so in case of contamination you might be able to hold a party responsible.  Also, the mapping of the recharge areas will allow for better community planning in the future to avoid any of these problems

  3. the previous answer is spot on.  i might add also to be able to estimate the rate of recharge of water into the aquifer as this would help determine if the resource is a sustainable supply for what it is being used for.
