Question:

NEED URGENT HELP WITH CICHLIDS!?

I have 8 Mollies, 3 Cory cats, 4 Platties and two Cichlids in a 65 gallon tank.

I took the Cichlids in after my ex couldn't take care of them, I had seven, found homes for 5 of them, but now I'm stuck with two. They have been all doing fine until now. The Cichlids are nipping on the fins of the Cory's. They're still alright but have some chunks of dorsal fins missing.

My 30 gallon hospital tank cracked three days ago and I can't possibly get another one. I will put one of the Cichlids in a breeding net and the other one on a 1.5 Gallon tank for now. They will eat my other fish during the night.

Will they be okay? They're a bit bigger than one inch. Can I keep them in there for a few days until I find a home for them? Which might take up to 7 days? Or should I get Buckets for them?

  1. I wouldn't put the cichlid in the 1.5 gallon tank he can get ick fast. I would use buckets that never had soap in them. Also if u want to get rid of them sell em on ebay or craiglist. Goodluck!!!

  2. Yes they're fine

For tonight that should be fine.  Longer term then that, and I think you're going to very much stress them

I VERY much agree with Dreammaker though.  In order to really find out what's going on here, you need to provide the species these fish are.  I am a little surprised that your new fish are harassing the cories.  Keep in mind though, you're footprint should be able to allow the cories to find a new space where they won't get bothered.

You know what might as well be an even better fix and you won't have to rehome these fish is to add in more decor and shift around the decor you have now.  By changing up the boundries, it causes in almost every species of cichlid, to find "new" area's to dwell in.  This confuses the cichlids to think they are in a new area of water, and new boundries become established.  You should find as well, by adding in more rocks and other enclosed decor, it should supress the need to attack other fish pretty well.

  4. Take them to your local tropical fish store, or local home-owned pet store, they should take them in. Mine did for my oscars.

  5. Without knowing what kind of cichlids they are it is hard to tell. You might try to see if you local fish store will take them in trade for some food or something that you need.Or you could try free cycle or Craig's list. I found a home for a two foot catfish (a hybrid between a tiger shovelnose and a red tail catfish) that was in a tank that I got off of Craig's list plus a coupe of large oscars and 4 large plecos very quick. I did not have room for them in any of my tanks so I re-homed them in less than 3 hours. If you have a large container that will hold water and it is clean you can house them overnight in there, just use some water from the tank and some new treated water of the same temp.

  6. f you have buckets that would be great, the net is too small

and you can give them to a pet shop or a friend. even a neighbor.

  7. They will be fine.  I have a two and a half inch African Cichlid mother holding her fry inside of a breeder net right now doing just fine. I have kept many preg mothers and fry in breeder nets with no problem.  The other one in the 1.5 will be fine to as long as there is some sort of filtration and oxygen source.  If you don't have an O2 pump you ma run into problems but if they are only a little more than an inch you should be fine.

    Good Luck
