I want to be a volunteer at my son's school for the PTA. The PTA is in charge of all the different volunteer opportunities available at the school and requires all applicants to get a DPS clearance number on-line. I was arrested on a criminal charge in October 2007 and am contesting that arrest. I have not been to trial yet for this charge and have not been found guilty. I was denied clearance on-line from the DPS. I thought that a person was innocent until proven guilty and since I have not been found guilty, why would DPS have any record of my arrest? What records or information on individuals does DPS have access to? Is there a web site that we can go to that identifies what information that DPS has?

  1. Sadly, to even be on trial is a blemish that is hard to overcome. Since it's with the Education System, they want to ensure that everything is on the up and up. Don't take it personal, it's for the protection of the children. Get your name cleared, and then prove to them how great of a parent you are.

  2. Are you serious?  Do you really think that that kind of information is just given away??  I understand now why you where arrested- dumb.  Get a lawyer.

  3. DPS has access to the criminal data base so the info that you were arrested is there.  DPS not okaying is not the same as saying you are not innocent.  You have an open criminal charge. As a parent, as unfair as it is, you have to understand why DPS has to draw the line.

No offence, and I do not mean to imply you are in the following group but to make the point  --  You would not want someone with a pending case of abuse or drug trafficing at the school with your son.

You are under a cloud as it were right now and that sux.  But clouds pass and as you feel the situation should be resolved soon, focus on making that sooner then later.  Or you could try and call them and ask them why you were denied.  Ask to speak to someone about your particular circumstances. Sometimes the computer-on-line-proceedure denies you based on the fact that anything at all exsists for you in the database.  If its not something that should preclude you from being with the kiddos a human can make a judgement call where a computer can't.
