New BLUE NOSE owner - pitbull?

Hi,

my sister just got a 5 weeks old pitbull, blue nose female. Im looking for any advise you can give us to better educate this puppy to more the most sociable possible, not turn her into an attack type of dog, I understand this is still a pitbull, but we want to make sure how we and people around us can be safe. 1 specific question, what to do when she tried to bite? today, she did so on a couple of occasions, not serious but still we dont want her to get that habit, also make sure not to over punish her.

Your help is much appreciated.

  1. my friend just got a really young blue nose too. if you want it to be friendly, have it around as many people as possible as a puppy. they he wont grow up to attack. although pits can be protective of their owners, showing them that other people are ok will help out ALOT

  2. First of all she is too young to be away from her mother and litter mates and it is illegal to get a pup under 8 wks of age depending on the state you are in.  Some states it's 7wks of age.

She is biting, nipping cause she was not given the oppotunity to learn bite inhibiation from her litter mates.

Blue nose is not a type of Pit Bull it's just a color ( I own two that are blue)  and Pit Bull is two words not one.  Sorry that is a pet peeve of mine.

Please join www.pitbullforum.com  you have to do an intro before you get full access but there is alot there you to read and you can post all the questions you want to help you get through all this.

They love pictures there too.....so you can show your girl off.

They are REAL Pit Bull owners and on here you get alot of incorrect info.  It drives me nuts.

On the forum in the training section is a thread for a mouthy puppy.   Do not yell NO at the pup.  No should not be in anyones vocabulary when it comes to training a dog.    When it bites you yell ouch it will startle her, then give her something she can chew on.

Do not take this puppy anywhere she is to young.  She has not had all of her shots if she has had any.  You need to wait until at least the 2nd set.

Get her into obedience class at 10 wks of age.  But you can start training her at 6 wks on your own also.   My pup knew sit, down and shake by 7 wks of age.

Hey Amy if you have a pet peeve about people calling there dog's blue nose Pit Bull at least spell Pit Bull correctly.  It's not pitbull it's Pit Bull.

To the OP, after you do a proper introduction on the forum a mod will come along and grant you access it takes a couple of days.     You can post your pictures in the thread you already started in the intro section.   Make sure you do a proper intro there is a sticky about proper intro   http://www.pitbullforum.com/viewtopic.ph...

  3. any puppy bites. it is how they play. you just need to teach her in a non-abusive manner that that is not OK.  I have a pit.  they are not aggressive unless they are taught to be.  you will be safe unless she is abused horribly or taught how to fight.  socialize her well with humans but MOSTLY other dogs.  next time tell your sister or any one else in your family to research a dog and its breed a little better before they get one!

  4. 5 weeks is way too young for the puppy to be away from its mother. the ideal age for a puppy to go away from its siblings and mother is 8 weeks. It may not seem like a big deal, the weeks between 5 and 8, but the puppy learns things he needs to learn such as, various behaviors and emotions. the puppy learns social behaviors by being with its sblings, such as how hard its bite can be or how to react in certain situations.

you're going to have to tell your sister that she'll need to act as a sibling and a mother, for example.. if the puppy goes to play and bites, yelp (or yell ouch) just as her siblings would have. some owners  even growl at the puppy just as the mother would have done.

never get physical with the puppy either, you don't want the puppy to grow up scared at every raised hand or voice.

take the puppy to obedience classes.. and bring the dog around other dogs and people constantly.. BUT WAIT UNTIL THE PUPPY HAS ALL THE SHOTS TO BE HEALTHY AND STAY HEALTHY. most vets say wait til they're 4 months, some say wait til their 3rd series of shots.

  5. Okay for one pet peeve a pitbull is a pitbull nose colour, stop including it. There is no such thing as a red nose or blue nose pitbull anymore than i have a black nose rottweiler it's just the colour of their nose and has no holding on temperament or type. It's just an american pitbull terrier..that's it.

You will have a lot more issues with nipping since the pup was taken from the mother so young. When the pup bites pull away and yelp loudly, stop all play at once. Do this EVERY time, you HAVE to be consistent about it.

  6. All puppies go through a biting stage, they chew on everything. It's gonna happen. You have to let them know what they can't bite. Get plenty of chew toys and bones that she can chew on. She's not really old enough for training.

  7. First off, you don't punish her.  Negative reinforcement (punishing) is especially harmful in the development of stronger, more dominant (and stubborn) breeds like pits, boxers, rotties, etc.  Always use positive reinforcement.

Second, the biting is a normal part of puppyhood -- it has nothing to do with her breed.  All puppies go through this teething stage and that's when they need to be taught bite inhibition.

And last -- this pup should not be away from its mother yet!  No good breeder would let their pups go before 8 weeks of age.  Next time do your research before buying a pup.

Here is a great article on socializing your pup:

    That should get you started.

    Add:

Everyone should help with training.  You don't want the pup to become too attached to one specific person -- not only could that cause the pup to become overly protective of that one person, but it would be useless if that person isn't always going to be around.  They say when you bring a new puppy into a family with children, let the children help with feeding and training, so the puppy sees the children also as leaders and not playmates.  Same goes for multiple people in a household.

    Another add:

So your sister's taking this pup everywhere.  For socialization that's actually a GREAT thing, and something she should continue to do throughout the dog's life.  It will shape a much friendlier, outgoing, and WELL- SOCIALIZED dog. ;)

On the other hand, many would argue that the pup has not completed its vaccinations yet; so be careful where you take it.

  8. well 5 weeks is way to young to take it from its mother if theres any way possible give back until 8 weeks old, your starting off on a bad note, pups taken to early can have behavioral issues, as for the biting its a puppy they will do that they need plenty of chew toys, when she bites you say no in a stern voice and ignore her for a couple of minutes, you will need to socialize this dog with people and other dogs, best way to start that is obedience classes... you should really do research on a breed and training before getting the actual pup.

everybody that will be in her life needs to help with the training.

  9. As I posted in your other topic:

First of all, Blue nose is a COLOR of American Pit Bull Terrier, not the breed. The color doesn't change the temperament of the dog.

What you need to do is learn about basic dog care. Pit Bulls are NOT good dogs for First time dog owners. They have bad reps, strong personality's, and can be really overbearing if your not up to it.

www.dogforums.com is a great place to start reading up on dog behaviors and being a new dog owner. Look at the stickies at the beginning of each board.

Good luck and read up on the breed. The more you read on Pit bulls and dogs in general the better off you are.

Also as soon as your dog has all over its first shots, you need to get it into training classes that run about $70 to $100. The more your dog is around other dogs the better, BUT that doesn't mean your dog will never be dog aggressive. Its in the breeds genes and you should be ready for it if it happens.

  10. The best thing for this pup would be to go back to his mum and litter mates for another 3 or 5 weeks.  That is where they learn to behave like a pack animal and their place in the pack.

The Denver Dumb Friends league has some really good information on puppy behaviours and training.  www.ddfl.com
