I totally agree with Scott C on what he said.

As for wanting to know which city is better - there is no city better that the other as they both have heaps to offer on different dimensions.  If you would tell us true blue kiwi's (sic, sic) what you enjoy or what you like we will then be able to tell you which of these two cities would be best suited to your style.

Pros and Cons of each location:

Auckland:

Cons: Horrible traffic, expensive, high crime.

Pros:  Close to AKL Int Airport, close to Northland, Coromandel.

Wellington:

Cons: Have to rely on Wellington airport, which closes frequently due to fog.

Pros:  Beautiful city, close to south island, small and more intimate with so much to do in a small area!

I think Welly is way better.  That's just my opinion.

Here's a few notes I've noted about Auckland, compared to Wellington:

1)Auckland has more jobs and better paying ones, and it easier for outsiders to get jobs. Also a more diversified employment market as Wellington is dominated by government jobs.

2)Auckland is far warmer and has better weather in general. Wellington is cold, damp and windy.

3)Auckland does have a lot of crime, but the majority of these crimes tend to be contained in certain areas such as South Auckland. If you stick to 'safe' areas such as the north shore, central suburbs and the like, these areas are statistically safer than most other NZ neighbourhoods.

4) Traffic is worse in Auckland, but if you live close enough to your job it shouldn't be too bad.

5) Auckland has more of a cosmopolitain flare to it and distinct suburbs from high end such as g*y Ponsonby to Rich Remuera to Pacific Managere. There's a suburb for everyone depending on what kind of person you are.

6)Auckland is the only place in NZ with a 'true' international airport, which makes it convenient for travel.

7)Auckland has more beaches and nicer ones too. A beautiful harbour, a forest range and much more in a short drive.

9) Cost of living is only marginally above Wellington's, yet there are 10 times many jobs which most pay more.

10) Auckland is considered 'big and busy' by NZ standards, but in reality Auckland is still a small city with only 1.4million people yet it is very relaxed compared to other major world cities.

Personally I prefer Wellington.

The two cities are quite different to each other.  Wellington is a compact city with a funky vibe, big on the arts and cafe scene.  Wellington, being smaller, is easier to get around with a great public transport system.  It is even relatively hasslefree to find yourself in the outlining regions of Porirua and the Hutt Valley (where you will find the shopping malls rather than boutique stores and stores with a streetfront).  Wellington has a homely feel, where (if you have been here long enough) you will often bump into someone you know.

Auckland is a much larger city covering a wider area with a not so extensive public transport system, which makes having a car a necessity - this unfortunately contributes to Auckland's traffic congestion.  However, Auckland's size has it's benefits - more people = more variety = more opportunities etc.  Generally speaking, Auckland has a higher salary on average, plenty job opportunities and for some reason affordable apartments among many other advantages.  Auckland's size gives you anonymity amid the  masses.

Auckland is like any other big city, it has its good points and its bad points, but I just don't think it has the character that Wellington possesses.

whoever the idiot is that just put -"dont go on the streets after 9pm" obviously this is absolute gargage!!! this is quite infutriating to see such nonsense. I have two things to say one is if you are a kiwi you should be ashamed of yourself putting such rubbish as people form all over the world may see this and think there is some truth to it!! the other thing is if you are either not from auckland or nz then again please do not state such c**p!

Im an Aucklander but prefer Wellington. It has more culture, its less busy, and is close to the South Island which is just beautiful!

Both have bad traffic

Wellington is Windy Auckland is overcrowded

But wellington overall better
