I just adopted a 1yr. old male cat from the Humane Society. He is a great cat, very sweet. The problem that I am having is that he wants to play with me at night when I need to sleep! I have only a studio apartment, so I can't simply close my door to keep him away. I have a hallway leading into my apartment, and I was thinking of putting up some sort of gate at night, and keeping his litter box, a blanket, toys, and water in the hallway with him. Does this sound like a good idea, or will he just jump a gate or meow all night long?? Please help, I need to sleep!

  1. Is it possible to get another cat for your cat?

    Is he a indoor cat?

    He is lonely.

The good news is, as he is still young, he should accept another cat /kitten quite easily, as his desire for someone to play with will be greater.

Once he has a friend to keep each other busy, they will be more a cat cat rather than a person cat, they will still be sweet toward you, but will not bother you as much unless they want something like food, which is typical of cats!

  2. You have found out that cats are creatures of the night.  And if you put up a gate, you will find that cats can leap quite high.

If you try and lock your cat out, he may respond by meowing.  There are a couple of approaches.  One is a vigorous play session before you go to bed.  The other approach is to realize that if he gets no response from you at night, he will get bored and look for some other entertainment.

If he has a window to look out, it is wide screen cat TV, providing him with hours of entertainment.

I have woken up in the morning with all manner of cat toys on my bed, brought by my cats hoping I would play with them.  You might adjust sooner than you think.

  3. No, don't put a gate. Your cat might jump out of the gate and yes, probably meow all night. It's because cats are more active at night than during the day. The typical feline sleeps approximately 16 hours a day, which means it spends about 60 percent of its life off-line. But instead of taking their rest in one stretch, felines take a number of catnaps and it sleeps more during the day and hardly sleeps at night.

This preference for early evening and early morning activity can cause problems for owners—especially if the cat stays up half the night prowling the house or goes into a frenzy of activity at 5 a.m.

So, I suggest that you buy another cat

(only if you want to) so that your cat has company.

Or, buy head muffs so that your cat's

    meow can't be disturbing.

Well, if you really want to buy a gate,

build a high enough gate to make sure

the cat can't jump out of the gate and provide some entertainment to your cat like some toys and food and comfort.

Also make sure the cat is safe. ^^

  4. cats are more active at night, try to ignore him cuz if he know he can keep you awake all night h**l never stop. try playing with him durin the day so hes a little more tired at night, even if he tries to sleep all day. dont let him have control over you. cuz hed know!

and a fence wont stop him from jumping over. h**l get used to your schedule, take my advise and give it some time.

  5. Oh Wow!!!  Good for you to adopt.  I don't know how much time you have with him during the day..but if you can, play with him lots during that time.  He's happy he's with someone that cares..(for real)..You both will soon get into a routine, but remember cats are nocturnal..that is their natural instinct is to hunt/play at night.  A gate probably won't keep him out unless it is VERY HIGH.. but you could try it.  Be sure to keep his food and water AWAY from his litter box..they don't like to eat/drink where they have to use the potty.  Just give him and yourself some time and I think you will find you have a wonderful companion and he in you.  Good Luck

  6. I had the same problem not even 4 mos ago. I adopted a 5 yr old male cat and he would be up all night meowing and pawing at the blinds, or playing with his bell toys and keeping me up. If I tried to close the door to my bedroom, he would meow at the door all night til I opened it. My advice is to keep a spray bottle of water close by and if he does something that wakes you up, shake the bottle and give him a spritz. Now my cat runs at the sound of the shake and he knows he's acting up and shuts up right away. It'll take some getting used to (you both have to adjust) but in a couple weeks, everything will be fine!

Try to also tire him out during the day so he's more likely to sleep at night. Hope that helped!
