NFC East is a tough division, says New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin – NFL News
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has said that National Football Conference (NFC) East is a tough division in which every team is capable of surprising its opponents.
In view of Giants’ Week 8 game against Dallas Cowboys, Coughlin asserted that divisional games are very tough and hard to win.
Although Giants are leading NFC East at present, they are 1-2 in the division. They have faced defeats against Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, and managed to defeat Washington Redskins recently. However, many of their players, including Coughlin, were impressed with the way Redskins played and especially appreciated their rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3).
As per the current standings, Giants are leading the division, while Cowboys and Eagles are tied at second spot, just above Redskins.
Giants are scheduled to face all the three divisional opponents one more time in the season and these games can greatly affect the standings and playoff chances of all the four teams of the division.
Even before the start of the season, it was believed that NFC East would turn out to be the toughest division in the entire league this season. And after seven weeks, it has proven to be true.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Coughlin said when asked it NFC East was different than other divisions:
“I think the question of just the rivalries, the fact that these teams have been around for so long, playing each other for so long, has just built up tremendous tradition.”
Giants have already faced a defeat against Cowboys this season and they are hoping to settle the score next weekend when they face the same opponent again. Coughlin said that the game is important for both Cowboys and Giants. He said of NFC East:
“It’s the nature of this division.  It doesn’t get easy, it’s tough.  Each of these games is a battle.  I was looking at the differential in our two losses, what, nine points?  Each game is a battle; these divisional games are very exciting.  You pinpoint each one of those.  They do take a physical drain on you, but nevertheless, you have to come right back again.”
