NFL 3 weeks in review
It’s been an action packed season so far. Fans were treated to great games all around, thrilling and entertaining competitions. Predictions from the preseason fell through, some turned out to be right. The NFL has a way of surprising everyone. Still every
year fans scramble to get as much of the NFL as they can. So without further ado let’s look where things stand into the third week of the NFL.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have gone undefeated this season in their 3 games and are looking very strong. They opened the season against the Atlanta Falcons and won 9 to 15. The Falcons are by no means pushovers, but the Steelers were just better. The Steelers did not
allow a single touchdown in that game even though the Falcons quarterback managed 252 yards in the game. The Steelers defence was able to stop the Falcons when it counted.
A week later they went head to head with the Tennessee Titans. The Steelers were completely in control of the game even though it would appear otherwise, when looking at the statistics. The Steelers totalled 150 fewer yards but they used them intelligently
while their defence denied the Titans vital plays. The Titans had a lot more yards than the Steelers but yards don’t automatically translate into touchdowns as something the Titans won’t easily forget. Even with over 250 yards against the Steelers’ 149 yards,
the Titan were able to make it to the end zone just twice while the Steelers made their way to the endzone on 5 different occasions, one of them being an 89 yards touchdown on kickoff return. The game ended with Pittsburgh at 19 and the Titans at 11.
Granted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can’t really measure up to the Pittsburgh Steelers but the contest between the sides can be described as nothing but a massacre. The Steelers kept stopping Tampa Bay’s drives and frustrated their defence with an incredible
200 yards rushing (against 75 from the Steelers) and another 186 passing. The game ended 38 to 13 for Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have an impenetrable defence and an offence that compliments it perfectly. Not to mention that Steelers have been crushing their opponents so far without their Starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who is serving a 4 week suspension. After
the fourth week the Steelers would become even more formidable. The playoffs are virtually guaranteed and the Super Bowl is a very real possibility at this point.
New Orleans Saints
The current world champions get a mention, if for no other reason then, for being the world champions. There haven’t been back-to-back world champions since the Denver Broncos took two consecutive titles more than 10 years ago. The Saints might not be the
team to break the champions curse but they certainly are contenders.
The Saints have won two of their three regular season games losing their last game against the Falcons. Their season opened with against the Minnesota Vikings pitting legend against legend. The Saints were led by quarterback Drew Brees and the Vikings by
Brett Favre. It was a touch competition that could have gone this way or that with the slightest mistake. In the end though, the Saints won 14 against 9.  Brees was unstoppable with 237 yards while Favre was hampered by the Saints defence. The Saints forced
an interception out of the Favre and held him down to just 171 yards passing.
The Saints next encountered the San Francisco 49ers. The Saints were the favourites but the 49ers gave them a run for their money. 49ers quarterback played it hard against the Saints to rake in 275 yards of 23 completed passes, but his overtures cost him
two interceptions. The 49ers defence gave it their all but the Saints still squeezed out two touchdowns and three field goals from them.
Finally in the third week the Saints suffered their first defeat. Atlanta focused on the running game against the Saints to great effect and efficiency. Atlanta rushed 202 yards against the Saint’s paltry 43 yards on the green. Brees tried to make up for
the deficiency with an astonishing 365 yards passing, 3 touchdowns but he also conceded two interceptions.
The Saints don’t look as good as they did in the previous season. But even with that one game that didn’t end well for the Saints, they have proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with and a team to be on the lookout for into the playoffs.
