NFL: Gary Kubiak will stay as Houston Texans head coach
The Houston Texans have decided to keep Gary Kubiak as their head coach.
Although they had another dismal season in 2010 without a playoff spot, the team announced on Monday that Kubiak is here for at least another season.
However, the team has made many changes on the defence. Linebackers coach Johnny Holland, defensive coordinator Frank Bush, secondary coach David Gibbs and assistant linebackers coach Robert Saleh were all fired. The Texans lost eight of their last ten games
due to a poor defence that allowed 4,280 passing yards and 33 passing touchdowns. They are tied with the Dallas Cowboys as having the worst defence in the league.
"We've got some serious problems that we've got to address," Kubiak said. "It definitely wasn't all coaching, in my opinion. We've got issues across the board. I had to make a decision on how we can get better, and so doing that, I made that decision to
let those four guys go."
Linebacker DeMeco Ryans was surprised to hear that Holland was released.
"It's tough to lose a guy who's been with me for my first five years in the league," he said in a phone interview. "I learned a lot from him. That was definitely shocking, that he had to go."
Ryans is a Pro Bowler who ruptured his Achilles tendon, causing him to be sidelined for the last 10 games of the season.
The team has seen only one season with a winning stint in 2009, when Kubiak led the team to a 9-7 record.
Kubiak’s contract is set to expire after the 2012 season and he admitted that he was lucky that owner Bob McNair decided to keep him as coach.
"We visited and decided on a new direction," Kubiak said. "Obviously, him giving me a chance to move us in that direction, I'm very thankful for that. But I know I've got a lot of work to do and a lot of problems to fix."
Hopefully, the problems will be fixed and the work done before the start of the next season.
