NFL: LSU Tigers’ cornerback Patrick Peterson going pro
Louisiana State University’s cornerback Patrick Peterson has announced his decision to enter this year’s NFL draft. Peterson is likely to be one of the top defensive prospects of the draft.
“I pretty much achieved all my goals here,” Peterson said. “I believe it just was the right time to go.” Peterson really has achieved all he could with in Louisiana State. He has won the Thorpe Award for being the best defensive back in college football
and the Chuck Bednarik Award for being the best defensive player in the country.
His coach Les Miles said that the decision to enter the draft was made by Peterson and his family independently but he agreed with it completely. He added that Peterson's performance this year as a defensive back and as a kick and punt returner had earned
him a draft position which was too good to not pursue.
While announcing his decision to enter the draft, Peterson spoke highly of the LSU Tigers and the time he had spent at the university. “I'd like to thank the wonderful fans at LSU,” he said. “There is no place in America that has the fans and student body
that we have.”
Helping him along with the draft is Peterson’s excellent performance on special teams. He was named the special teams’ player of the year for 2010. “The ability for him to make good plays on special teams should definitely increase his draft position,” Miles
said. With his numbers, awards and skills, this year indeed was the best time for Peterson to enter the draft.
“Leaving this place with the ability that I have was just a no-brainer for me,” Peterson said. He would most probably enter the draft as a first round pick and be one of the most sought after defensive players on offer this year. He said that he would start
training for the NFL scouting combine in the coming days. Peterson’s goal for now is to be the highest rated defensive player and cornerback entering the draft this year. “I have to go to this combine and perform well and hopefully I can be a No. 1 pick.”
