NFL News: David Clowney heading to Ghana for Charity
So far the media has kept a very negative approach regarding the National Football League for the past few months. It is largely due to a series of events that have attracted negative press to the sport. It started with Michael Vick’s dog-fighting case being the biggest highlight from the NFL which was followed by numerous players being sent to jail for unauthorized weapon and drug trafficking charges.
Out of the blue, New York Jets wide-receiver David Clowney has made it to the headlines for something positive for the NHL at last. Clowney has been travelling across the globe and working for several charities in a bid to redeem himself. The wide-receiver has been busy in the offseason as he went from New Jersey to Haiti to help out the people affected by the shattering earthquake that took place in January.
According to various media outlets, the football player is all set to visit Ghana in the coming month. Clowney is taking his friend and teammate Santonio Holmes with him to help out the underprivileged children and to spread football in the West African country. David stated in a press conference that he has plans on visiting, schools, orphanages and hospital’s for children in the African country.
He is going to donate $1,000 to each hospital that he visits and will distribute 250 pounds of clothes amongst the children at the David Clowney Foundation. In March, Clowney and his teammates including James Ihedigbo, Ahmad Carroll and Vernon Gholston worked with Wyclef Jean’s charity to aid the people of Haiti.
Clowney told various news reporters that he was inspired by his trip to Haiti and had planned a trip to Ghana to facilitate and help the people of the country. He was super excited after his three day journey to Haiti which was why he is reaching out to the under-privileged families in Ghana. David told the media that it was going to be his last stop in the offseason for a charity purpose and plans on returning back to the training camp on 1st August.
The 25-year-old receiver has held many training camps and celebrity basketball matches at his home in Florida and has also participated in many charity events along with his teammates in Alabama and Birmingham.
Santonio Holmes has been a close friend of Clowney since high school. The Jets acquired Holmes in 2010 from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Holmes recently won the Super Bowl Most Valued Player Award and led his former team the Pittsburgh Steelers to a win at the Super Bowl Champion (XLIII) in 2008. The Jets were ecstatic about Holmes joining the team and David is quite content with the entire scenario and is not letting it affect his friendship.
Holmes will not be appearing in this year’s playoffs because he was suspended for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Previously, Holmes has been arrested on two different occasions and had become a nuisance for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This was why experts say why Holmes was practically given to the Jets.
Helping out third-world countries may just be a way for Holmes to prove to the league that he is on his best behaviour after joining the New Jersey Jets.
When David Clowney was approached by reporters regarding his relationship with Santonio Holmes, Clowney said, "I've known Santonio since I was in 10th grade. Him coming to New York was not the first time I was meeting him. We've always been good friends. With him in the picture now, of course these first four games, I'm going to have to do everything I can every time the ball comes my way. Even when he comes back, as long as we go to the Super Bowl and win, I'm going to be happy."
David Clowney and Santonio Holmes both attended the 2010 ESPY Awards ceremony that was held in Los Angeles along with their teammates. They resided in the luxurious Resort in Newport Beach after the ceremony, which was described as a “nice little week” by David Clowney.
