NFL News: Denver Broncos bet on John Elway and Tim Tebow
A legend has returned to Denver Broncos. Hall of Famer and the quarterback who led the Broncos to 5 Super Bowl games and two championships is back with the franchise as their new Vice President. His job is the same as it was years ago: give Denver fans something
to cheer about. But, can a change in the Dove Valley headquarters really turn things around for the Broncos?
Franchise owner Pat Bowlen certainly hopes so. “I can't think of a better job and a better guy to do that job than John Elway, and I look forward to great things in the future,” said Bowlen. He went on to say that he believes Elway could lead the Broncos
to more Super Bowls.
He has his work cut out for him. Turning the Broncos into a Super Bowl team is going to require some serious effort and Elway is already getting to work. Work that Elway is not familiar with. In his days, Elway was one of the best quarterbacks in the league
but being the vice president is a whole different ball game. Elway is unfazed by the difficulty of what he has been tasked with. “I don't believe in 'I can't,” Elway said.
The decision to bring Elway to the franchise was introduced on Wednesday and the excitement of having the hall of famer back is quickly fading. There is work to be done and fans want results, not just big names. “I recognize the scepticism that comes with
hiring somebody on the front-office level who has not been involved in an NFL team since his playing days were over,” Elway said. While admitting that, he added he knows what it takes to win football games. He has limited administrative experience, so far
has worked as a consultant and held advisory position but that is about it as far as his qualifications go.
The Broncos appear to have faith in him and that faith would be tested soon. Denver at present is without a coach. After one of the worst seasons in recent memory, Broncos let go Josh McDaniels and it is not up to Elway to find a replacement for him. The
Broncos won’t just settle for anyone.
“The hope is the coach likes Tim Tebow,” Broncos president Joe Ellis said. “John knows he's a good football player, and the hope is, with the new coach, he can become a good quarterback. I wouldn't call it a marriage (that the coach will have to have with
Tebow), because you don't do that. But John went back with the personnel staff to evaluate, and they all came to the consensus that if we had to do the deal again to get Tim Tebow, we would've done it.”
Even with a new vice president, a new coach and Tim Tebow, Ellis said that he was careful not to be too optimistic. He said that he knew how difficult it was for any club to win in this league and that many major decisions about the club’s future still had
to be made. “We have to re-evaluate the roster, make a lot of tough calls, so I'd like to wait and be a realist.”
