NFL News: Vince Young Apologizes to Head Coach Jeff Fisher
After telling head coach Jeff Fisher that he is walking out on him, Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young seems to be having second thoughts.
According to sources, Young sent an apologetic text message to Fisher on Tuesday about his actions after Sunday’s loss against the Washington Redskins.
After Washington’s game-winning kick, Young threw his shoulder pads and his #10 jersey into the stands and then walked past reporters and even brushed off a teammate who tried to talk to him before storming off into the locker room. But before leaving, he
did have a few words with Fisher. Nobody knows whether he was upset because of his torn flexor tendon or his team’s loss, but Fisher told him “don’t walk out on your teammates,” to which Young replied, “I’m not walking out on them. I’m walking out on you.”
Hours after his temper tantrum, Young tweeted that he was ok and that he was sorry to his teammates, saying that he “Just want[s] to play.”
The next day, Young showed up at the team’s facility, but was instructed to leave by Fisher because he was not welcome at the team meeting that was taking place to discuss Young’s unstable condition with the team.
"There has been speculation that he has been banned," Fisher said. "That is not correct."
Young has now been placed on injured reserve and will be allowed to visit the team’s facility to seek treatment for his thumb.
"Yesterday, he was informed by a coach at the facility not to attend Monday's team meeting and was free to leave. The intention was to be able to talk to the team about Young's situation and how the team would move forward," the Titans said in a statement.
"Players that are on injured reserve are not required to attend team meetings.”
Fisher confirmed on Wednesday that he did receive a text message from Young stating an apology, but when asked if he would rather have heard the apology face-to-face, he replied, "You guys draw that conclusion. I'm not a real big text guy. I'm not really
into this new-age stuff. I don't Twitter or tweet. But I think face-to-face is a man thing, OK?"
When asked if a text apology is better than none at all, Fisher answered, "Someone could have grabbed his phone."
It is reported that Young thanked Fisher for the chance to play on the Titans squad and wished them luck for the rest of the season. Young concluded the message by requesting Fisher to have more poise and trust in him, saying that they were both after the
same thing; a Super Bowl victory.
Young will be out for the rest of the season, due to surgery required on his injured hand.
"That's the best thing that probably could've happened right now. Just need some time to cool off between the both of them and focus on this team," said Titans safety Michael Griffin.
