NFL Offseason Coaching Update (Part 8)
This is the eighth and final part in a series of articles discussing coaching changes in the NFL as of 18 February, 2011.
Our last stop in the coaching update is the AFC East, specifically the New England Patriots and their division rivals, the New York Jets.
First, a bit of bad news. George Godsey is leaving the coaching staff of the University of Central Florida (UCF).The running backs coach is leaving after seven seasons with the UCF Knights to join the Patriots on their offensive staff. So yes, it is bad
news for UCF but not for the Pats.
"George has been with me for a long time as a player and coach," UCF coach George O'Leary said in a statement released by the school. "This is happy news to see him get this opportunity to expand his coaching career with a great organization like the New
England Patriots. I wish him good luck there."
And so do we.
New England confirmed that the offensive assistant posting would go to Godfrey on Thursday as well as two other coaching changes announced on their Twitter page. Harold Nash was promoted from assistant strength and conditioning coach to head strength and
conditioning coach while Brian Ferentz was given the title of tight ends coach from being an offensive assistant last season. And the season before that. And the season before that.
Before joining the Pats in 2008, he was an offensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints in 2007 and the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. However, he didn’t play at all. Too bad. Nash had gone to one training camp in the NFL with the New York Giants before going
to the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was named CFL All-Star three times and recorded 367 tackles and 24 interceptions as a defensive back. The 40 year old from Louisiana had been assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Pats since the 2005 season.
Godsey had been a quarterback under O’Leary at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1998 to 2001 and set the school’s record for career completion percentage and had the second highest career pass efficiency rating with 143.64. He also had the third
highest number of touchdowns with 41 in his school career. He was also a member of the Arena Bowl winning Tampa Bay Storm in 2003. In case you don’t know, the Storm are a Arena Football League (AFL) team.
So now moving onto the Jets. A local newspaper reported that Mike Bloomgren is leaving the team to be offensive line coach and run coordinator at Stanford University.
According to the newspaper, Stanford will announce the hiring of the Jets’ assistant offensive coordinator on Friday. Bloomgren has been with the Jets for four years now, spending two years as quality control coach before being promoted to offensive assistant.
He was then promoted to assistant offensive coordinator prior to the start of the 2010 season.
So that’s the end of coaching updates for now. The NFL Scouting Combine and the NFL Draft is coming up soon so teams’ staffs have a lot of work to do. Teams are doing whatever they can to make their coaching staff and playing roster the best possible for
a chance at the Lombardi Trophy next season.
