NFL: Seattle Seahawks want Matt Hasselbeck for 2011
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that he wants quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to come back to play in the 2011 season.
When asked about the quarterback’s future with the Seahawks, Carroll said that they will do everything they could to get Hasselbeck to come back to the team for an 11th season.
“We don't know the timelines or how that's going to work out, and all that kind of stuff, but that's a big issue for us that we're looking forward to. He's had a terrific run for us and we want to see what we can do to keep that going,” Carroll said.
The Seahawks are to play against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, January 16, 2011 in the National Football Conference divisional playoff game.
Hasselbeck’s current contract was inked at the start of the 2005 season. That contract is supposed to expire at the end of the 2010 season, after which Hasselbeck will become an unrestricted free agent.
“That's the first I've heard of that. I didn't know he said that,” Hasselbeck told reporters during a conference call on Wednesday. “We've had good communication all year long.”
He also said that he wants to be part of a winning team and one that is “headed in the right direction.”
“That's kind of been our goal here,” he said. “If we can get that done here and I can be a part of it, that'd be awesome. If not, I understand.”
Even though Hasselbeck was booed off the field recently, his bad performance was countered by their win over the New Orleans Saints in the first week of January 2011 in the NFC Wild Card game.
Hasselbeck had 272 passing yards as well as four touchdowns against the defending Super Bowl champions. He threw two touchdown passes to John Carlson, one to Brandon Stokley for 45 yards and a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams.
Hasselbeck left the field after Saturday’s game accompanied by his daughters and son.
“It was a great experience winning the game and then having them down on the field was special,” he said.
The Seahawks are set to play against the Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field.
