NFL: St. Louis Rams hire Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator
The St. Louis Rams hired former head coach for the Denver Broncos, Josh McDaniels as their own offensive coordinator late Tuesday.
The 34-year-old ex-head coach takes the place of Pat Shurmur, who left St. Louis to take up the head coaching job for the Cleveland Browns recently.
“We are happy to announce that Josh will be a part of our staff,” Coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement. “I've always recognized that he is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL. We think he is a great addition to our organization.”
There will be a news conference on Wednesday by Spagnuolo and McDaniels. McDaniels will participate in the presser through telephone.
Sources said that the team and McDaniels had hit a snag in negotiations on Tuesday, causing the team to expand its search of coaches to include those from the West Coast, where quarterback Sam Bradford emerged as a star during his rookie year.
They even requested permission from the National Football League to interview other coaches such as Atlanta Falcons’ assistant head and quarterbacks coach, Bill Musgrave, and Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell.
McDaniels had been a success with the New England Patriots as offensive coordinator, leading Tom Brady to where he is today. He became the NFL’s youngest head coach in 2009, at 32. He prefers the spread offence, which is the same that Bradford ran in college.
Bradford was the number one overall draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He came into the league bucking and broke many rookie records set by the four-time Most Valuable Player, Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning.
McDaniels was released by the Broncos on 16 December, 2010 with four games left in the regular season. The franchise suffered its worst performance in over 40 years along with off-field issues.
McDaniels was fined $50,000 by the league after a team cameraman filmed a practice session of the San Francisco 49ers in London, violating league rules. Although McDaniels did not view the tape or was involved in any way, he was fined because he knew about
the tape and did not inform proper authorities about it.
Hopefully, he will be able to stay out of trouble and do what is right for him and the team in the new season.
