NFL Update: Indianapolis Colts take a serious beating by the San Francisco 49ers – Part 2
The first quarter belonged to the Colts but the 49ers second quarter comeback gave them command of the game and a 10 point lead over the Colts. Shane Andrus kicked off and Brandon James brought it to the Indianapolis 26 yard line, as the third quarter began.
Curtis Painter led the Colts drive from the 26 yard line but the 49ers defence stopped the advance in its tracks. 3 incomplete passes and 6 yards later the Colts Pat McAfee punts for 43 yards and the 49ers take possession.
The 49ers start their drive at the 25 yard line. Anthony Dixon makes a 4 yard rush to the 29 yard line but the Colts stop the 49ers there to take back possession after a 48 yard punt from the 23 yard line. After another 23 yard drive, the Colts lose possession again to the 49ers. The third quarter sees no score for the first 10 minutes.
When the 49ers take possession on the 18 yard line, Dixon again completes an excellent 23 yard run. Immediately afterwards Quarterback Carr completes 24 yard pass to Jason Hill. The 49ers take 48 yards before losing 5 to a penalty. One play later, Carr completes an 18 pass followed by a four yard rush and another 12 yard pass to the Indianapolis 7 yard line. Anthony Dixon tried twice to break through the Colts defences but failed on both occasions. The 49ers then called their first timeout of the game.
They came back with a plan to defeat the Colts defence. Tight end Tony Curtis evaded the 49ers defence in the confusion on the 7 yard line and stood wide open to receive a short pass from Carr. Tony met no resistance, as he ran down for the 8 yard touchdown. Andrus again came up for the extra point and it was good. With four minutes to go in the third quarter, the Colts drive 13 yards in 7 plays and are unable to score.
Third Quarter ends with the Colts trailing by 17 points. There appears to be little else the Colts can do now with the 49ers firmly in control but they come back onto the field starting where they left off. They Colts have been making mistakes that cost them dearly in the last 2 quarters and they didn’t stop in the fourth either. Second play of the 4th quarter sees Quarterback Tom Brandstater throwing a pass at Colin Cloherty, which is intercepted by Linebacker Mike Balogun at the 32 yard line which Balogun takes another 19 yards towards the end zone.
Nate Davis completes two consecutive 16 yard and 24 yard passes to get to the 9 yard line, where Anthony Dixon takes over. Dixon goes up the middle to take 4 yards for the 49ers and then makes another 5 yard dash for a touchdown evading the Colts defence has he took to the left side of the end-zone. Andrus’ field goal is good and the 49ers raise the lead to 24 points.
The Colts caught a few breaks when Pat McAfee made a 47 yard punt after Colts couldn’t advance past the 16 yard line in 4 plays. The 49ers take possession on the 37 yard line but lose it again after a fumble which is recovered by Trevor Anderson on the 39 yard line. Immediately after Patrick Stoudamire incurs a penalty and the 49ers lose 36 yards and the play is taken to the 3 yard line. Tom Brandstater completes the pass for a 3 yard touchdown. Extra point is good and the Colts narrow the lead down to as the score comes to 34-17.
The 49ers make a final scoring drive at their 22 yard line and take it to the Indianapolis 25 yard line, where Shane Andrus attempts the final field goal of the game. The Final Score with 5 minutes remaining stood at 37-17.
