With the Regular Season almost three-quarters over, people and players are becoming more and more interested in who will win the season MVP (Most Valuable Player) Award. Most of those on the list of candidates for MVP are quarterbacks
but good performances from a wide receiver and a linebacker have earned them a spot on the MVP list among these successful quarterbacks.
Tom Brady
To no one’s surprise, the New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is the top candidate for season MVP. With nine TDs and no interceptions in his last five games, he and his team have won most games over the other MVP candidates, such
as Manning, Favre, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Flacco. Brady is the only player besides Matt Cassel to throw 14+ more TD passes than interceptions with 15, this season. Brady leads the 9-2 Patriots, who are currently tied with the Jets as the best team in
the NFL with a win percentage of .818.
Last week, against the Colts, Brady passed 19 completions out of 25 attempts for a completion percentage of 76. His longest pass was for 25 yards and had two TDs with no interceptions in the game, earning him a rating of 123.1.
So far this season, Brady has earned a QB rating of 100.6 with 215 completions of 329 attempts for a total of 2362 yards, which is about 65.4% in completions, averaging 7.18 yards per attempt. His longest pass was for 65 yards and has 19 TDs this season with
four interceptions and has been sacked 14 times.
Phillip Rivers
Number two on the MVP Watch is San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Thanks to Rivers, the Chargers have an average of 30 points per game in their three-game winning streak, and have now won more than half of their Regular Season
games. Rivers leads in the NFL with most passing yards, yards per attempt, and TD passes. He leads the 5-5 Chargers who are currently tied for second in the AFC West, and are ranked as the eighth best team in the AFC, along with three other teams who also
have a win percentage of .500.
His stats for 2010 include a completion percentage of 65.2, 0.2% below Brady, with 230 completions of 353 attempts for 3177 yards. As far as yards per attempt go, Brady leads the league with 9 with his longest pass at 59 yards.
He has 23 TDs this season, more than any other QB, but has five more interceptions than Brady with 9. He has been sacked 23 times which earns him a 105.0 QB rating. In the Chargers’ Week 11 game against the Broncos, Rivers went 15 for 24 for 233 yards with
his longest for 57 yards and had 4 TDs with 1 interception in the game, earning him a rating of 116.8.
Drew Brees
Moving up last week from the number six slot is New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees. Brees is now at number three, ranking second in the league in terms of TD passes with 22, one less than Rivers. Brees already has three more interceptions
so far this season than he had at the end of the last with 14, mostly due to the Saints’ decision to keep passing late in their victory against the Seahawks. Winning his last three games earns him a spot on the MVP Watch. Brees leads the 8-3 Saints who are
currently the second best team in the NFC with a win percentage of .727.
In Week 11 against the Seahawks, Brees went 29 for 43 for 382 yards, while his longest pass was for 32 yards, and racked up four TDs but gave up two interceptions, earning him a QB rating of 106.9. So far this season, Brees has
gone 290 for 417 for 2969 yards with his longest pass for 80 yards and has thrown 22 TDs but also has 14 interceptions and 13 sacks under his belt for a season QB rating of 93.3.
