NFL Update: MVP Watch Week 12 (Part 2)
With Brady, Rivers, and Brees out of the way, next up on the list of MVP candidates include three more QBs.
Down from number three last week is Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. Even though he has come down a slot, Vick continues to have the best season QB with 108.7 and has a set of skills unmatched by any other QB in the NFL. 20 QBs in the NFL have more TD
passes than Vick, but he has not thrown a single interception this season. He led the Eagles, who are at 7-3, to three successive wins, and will try to get a fourth in their game against Chicago. Vick leads the 7-3 Eagles, who are number one in the NFL East,
and are one of four teams who have a win percentage of .700.
In Week 11’s game against the Giants, Vick threw for 24 of 38 for 258 yards but had no TD passes in the game. Instead of throwing TDs, Vick would move the team down the field, and run the last couple of yards to the TD zone himself or by handing the ball
off to a runningback. He threw no interceptions that game and ran for 35 yards, earning him a QB rating of 83 for the game. So far this season, Vick has completed 120 passes out of 191 attempts for 191 for 1608 yards. He has run for 88 yards and had 11 TDs,
but has also been sacked 18 times this season, giving him a QB rating of 108.7.
Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts is number five on the MVP Watch, down from number four last week. He is one of only three players in the league that are already over 3,000 passing yards this season. The other two are Rivers and Kyle Orton who, unfortunately,
is not on the list of MVP candidates. Manning has fallen down to slot five after two losses in the Colts’ last three games, in which Manning threw five TDs but also five interceptions. With an average of 6.98 yards per attempt, this is Manning’s lowest career
average since his rookie year in 1998. Manning leads the 6-4 Colts, who are currently second in the AFC South and are the fifth ranked team in the NFL, along with three other teams who also have a win percentage of .600.
In Manning’s Week 11 game against the Patriots, he made 38 completions out of 52 attempts for 396 yards while rushing for 28, for four TDs and three interceptions. In that game, Manning had a QB rating of 96.3. So far this season, Manning has completed 286
passes out of 438 attempts for 3059 yards and ran 73 yards. He has thrown 30 TD passes along with 7 interceptions, and has been sacked 12 times, earning him a 94.2 QB rating.
Mr. Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons is the number six candidate on the MVP Watch as a QB. Coming down from number five last week, the Falcons are at home to play their two toughest home games of the season against Green Bay and then New Orleans. But with
a 5-0 record at home, Ryan shouldn’t have a problem. Atlanta usually does not expect Ryan to carry their entire offense, since they have a great rushing game, but he has shown recently that he can when he has to. Ryan leads the 8-2 Falcons, who are currently
first in the NFC South and have the highest win percentage in the NFC with .800.
In Week 11’s game against the Rams, Ryan went 26 for 39 for 253 yards in addition to 26 rushing yards. He threw two TD passes with no interceptions, earning him a QB rating of 101.8. Ryan has a season total of 2518 yards, going 238 for 377, while running
for 46 yards. He has thrown 18 TD passes and five interceptions this season, as well as being sacked 15 times. He has a season QB rating of 92.9.
The remaining candidates for season MVP will be discussed in the next article.
