NFL Update: Michael Vick rallies Philadelphia Eagles to 34-24 victory over Houston Texans
Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael has proven that he is a fighter down to his every last bone. He was clearly hurting but stood tall to lead Philadelphia to 34-24 victory over the Houston Texans. Vick threw 302 yards in the game in 22 successful passes.
He threw 2 touchdown passes and ran the ball himself for a total of three touchdowns.
He was harassed and kept getting hit throughout the game but got up each time. “I'm used to taking hits. It's not that bad,” Vick said. “If I take one and I lay down, then I took a good one. But I'm a pretty tough guy. I bounce back when I can. There's no
science to getting hit or protecting yourself.”
Eagles got off to a mixed sort of start. Jorrick Calvin returned Neil Rackers’ 72 yards kick for a 102 yards touchdown but the play was nullified due to an offensive holding penalty on Philadelphia’s Clay Harbor. Philadelphia scored a touchdown off the drive
regardless. He was accurate and fast, missing only one attempt in 6 to take Philadelphia to Houston’s 1 yard line. LeSea McCoy caught the final touchdown pass to put the Eagles in the lead.
“This young man is playing as good as anybody I've seen play in the NFL, and I've been doing it for a while,” Texans' coach Gary Kubiak said about Michael Vick. He said that the Texans tried to contain the quarterback but Vick still had a big night. Kubiak
said that Vick gave them a few opportunities for a turnover but Houston were unable to capitalize. One of those chances came near the end of the second quarter on Philadelphia’s 40. Vick fumbled the ball but the ball was recovered by Eagles’ LeSean. Philadelphia
went on to score a touchdown on that drive.
Houston’s quarterback Matt Schuab completed the same number of attempts as Vick but covered 68 more yards. Schaub threw two touchdown passes but it cost the Texans’ two turnovers. Following the Eagles’ first touchdown, Houston pushed down to Philadelphia’s
26 but could not move any further. Texans had to attempt a field goal from the 30 yard line and the attempt was good.
Half way through the end of the 2nd quarter, Eagles scored a field goal and Houston, a touchdown. Before the end of the quarter, Schaub was intercepted on the 38 yard line by Trevor Laws with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. Eagles
converted the turnover into a touchdown and created a 10 points lead over Texans.
Things turned around for Houston in the third quarter. Houston started the 3rd quarter on the 21 yard line. Schaub covered 45 yards in 3 plays with contributions from running back Arian Foster. On the 2nd and 9 at the Philadelphia’s
13 yard line, Schaub threw a short pass through the middle which Foster carried through to the end zone. Texans caught another break in the third quarter. Eagles took back possession on the 14 yard line and drove to Philadelphia’s 3 until just 54 seconds remained
in the quarter. Foster ran through to the end zone to score his second touchdown for Houston.
Houston had put a four points lead over Eagles but it would last only for a few minutes. Philadelphia started the quarter on the 46 yard line. They threw 33 and 9 yards passes to get to Houston’s 2 yard line and rushed the final yards to score the touchdown.
Eagles foiled the subsequent Texans’ drive and got back on the offensive within 3 minutes. In the start of the drive, Vick threw a 40 yard pass and got to Houston’s 29. Two penalties set back the Eagles by 15 yards. Philadelphia were still able to salvage
the drive. Vick threw a 19 yards pass and followed it up with a 5 yards touchdown pass to Owen Schmitt.
Houston were unable to cut down Philadelphia’s lead and lost the game with 24 points against 34.
