NFL Update: Minnesota Vikings' Brett Favre out for second straight game
After Brett Favre set a record for 297 straight regular season starts, 321 if you include playoffs, he has started a new record for himself.
Favre will be out for his second game in a row.
The Minnesota Vikings put Favre on the inactive roster again for this week's game against Chicago Bears. He was also out last week for the Vikes game against New York Giants, which they lost, 21-3.
Favre is still suffering from the sprained sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder, along with a sore hand. Favre has been fighting, and playing with injuries all season, including tendonitis in his elbow and a broken ankle.
Another week without significant improvement in his injury resulted in Favre being unable to throw without experiencing pain during Saturday's practice, said interim head coach Leslie Frazier.
This will give rookie quarterback, Joe Webb, an opportunity to start, which he will against the Bears next Monday at University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium, after the roof of the Metrodome collapsed from heavy snow last week.
Vikings also recently acquired veteran quarterback, Patrick Ramsey, to back Webb up, and R.J. Archer may be brought from the practice squad to the active roster for Monday's game.
"Joe Webb had a good day today," Frazier said. "He really seems as if this whole thing is not too big for him, and I'm really looking forward to watching him on Monday night."
Favre had said earlier in the week that he is eager to see Webb get an opportunity to start playing and also said that he knows that the team should start to develop a younger player to play as quarterback, especially after it seems certain that Favre will
finally retire at the end of the season.
Frazier still doesn’t seem ready to believe that the 41 year old veteran quarterback will retire, and says that he is firm with his decision to keep Favre off of injured reserve.
"The fact that he tried to do something today tells me that he has a strong desire to get back out there," Frazier said. "It's just, 'Will his body let him?' I know it's difficult for him. Everybody knows how competitive he is."
Frazier speaks to Favre often, and says that the quarterback's pain in his hand and shoulder is fading.
Favre injured his shoulder and hand after being blindsided by Buffalo Bills linebacker, Arthur Moats on December 5, which may mark the end of the 41 year old's impressive career.
"He's gradually getting better," Frazier said. "Just not enough to put him out there where he could play. Next week may be a little different, so we just have to kind of gauge it."
As for playing outdoors for the first time in over 20 years on Monday, Frazier is not discouraged, saying: "The condition looks terrific; from everything I've seen and heard."
Their game against the Bears will take place on Monday night at TCF Bank Stadium at 8:20 PM ET.
