NFL Update: Washington Redskins embarrassed by Philadelphia Eagles 59-28 - Part Three
The first quarter belonged entirely to Philadelphia Eagles as they faced off against Washington Redskins. With quarterback Donovan McNabb, the Red Skins were able to put up a fight in the second quarter with two touchdowns but Philadelphia answered with
2 of their own touchdowns and a field goal. By the end of first half, Philadelphia led with 45 points against just 14.
Washington continued a second quarter offensive drive into the third. McNabb started with a 26 yard pass to Keiland Williams but in the next play was sacked for 13 yards. When the third quarter opened with Washington on the 44 yard line, McNabb threw 7 and
28 yards passes to get the Redskins to Philadelphia’s 21 yard line. Keiland Williams rushed 9 yards and McNabb passed 6 yards to Anthony Armstrong to get the Redskins within 9 yards of the end zone. On the 9 yard, Williams rushed to the left of the field with
Washington’s linemen blocking for him. Safety Mikell Quintin got a hold of Williams just short of the end zone but Williams simply powered through and got the ball in for Washington’s third touchdown of the game.
Starting the quarter on a positive note, the Redskins' defence tried to up the ante too. For most part of the game, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick had no trouble passing around the ball and getting the yards but this drive proved to be more difficult. It
took the Eagles 10 plays and almost 6 minutes to get from their 29 yard line to Washington’s 3 yard line. On the three yard line, Vick held the ball for a good 8 seconds while the offensive line protected him. He looked for receivers until Jason Avant stood
wide open inside the end zone. Vick threw a short and low pass at Avant which he caught for touchdown.
Straight out of the touchdown, Eagles scored again but this time it was the defence which made the big play. McNabb was looking for Anthony Armstrong but Dimitri Patterson got in his way again. This was Patterson’s second interception of the night and the
third one McNabb threw. Patterson had a clear path all the way to the end zone and scored another touchdown for the Eagles.
By the end of third quarter, Eagles had scored 59 points while Washington still stood at 21. It was looking grim for the Redskins but they still had some fight left in them. Washington took possession of the ball in the second minute of the fourth quarter.
Keiland Williams started the offense with a 10 yard rush from the 16 yard line and followed it up with 4 more yards in the next play. McNabb took over and threw a 13 yard pass to Santana Moss and followed it up with 9 more yards with a pass to Roydell Williams
to take the Redskins into Philadelphia’s half.
Darrell Young and Keiland covered the remaining yards to the end zone. Young ran first for 16 yards followed by Keiland’s 32 yard touchdown run. Eagles tried the blitz but Washington were able to read it. Keiland pushed up through the middle and then right
to evade the Eagles. With the extra point, Washington got their points tally up to 28 which was still far short of what they needed.
Eagles knew they didn’t need to score again, just keep the ball out of Washington’s hands for as long as possible. After the touchdown, Eagles' offense took things slow. The offense covered 35 yards in 8 plays to get to Washington’s 35 yard line. On the
35, delay of game penalties pushed the Eagles back to the 45 yard line where they took the punt. With 4 minutes remaining, Washington had time for one more drive but they couldn’t make anything of it. The game ended with 59-28 and Philadelphia won the game.
