NFL Update: Washington Redskins embarrassed by Philadelphia Eagles 59-28 - Part Two
By the end of first quarter of Monday night’s Redskins vs. Eagles game, Washington trailed 28 points behind the Philadelphia. Dominant would be a mild word to describe the Eagles' offense and their defence had not allowed the Redskins to make any gains whatsoever.
Eagles were on the offensive again when the second quarter opened. Like the first quarter, they started the second with a touchdown. Philadelphia started the second quarter on Washington’s 48 yard line. Vick, again protected by the offensive line, took his
time to search for receivers. Jeremy Maclin was making his run for the end zone with DeAngelo Hall following closely behind him. Vick threw a perfect pass ahead of Hall and on the right most edge of the field. Maclin looked back and ran in reverse to catch
the ball and fell into the end zone on his back, almost going out of bounds. Hall protested with the officials but the play was touchdown. The extra point was good and Eagles stretched their lead to 34 against nothing in the first few seconds of the 2nd
quarter.
Washington’s unimpressive offense family came to life in the second quarter. Redskins’ quarterback, Donovan McNabb threw a 71 yard beauty at Fred Davis to set up Washington’s first touchdown of the game. McNabb fell behind the line of scrimmage to buy himself
some time. As the Eagles converged on him, he let the ball fly towards Davis who had escaped coverage. As Davis turned to catch the ball, he lost his footings but did not fall. He continued on down towards the end zone but he regain speed. That allowed Eagles
to get to him and push him out of bounds on the 3 yard line.
McNabb finished off the drive with a touchdown pass to Darrell Young. Both men moved right on the field before McNabb threw the pass for touchdown. McNabb continued to make up for Washington’s slow start in the first quarter. 4 minutes later, the Redskins
had possession again and McNabb was on fire. Eagles' defensive back, Dimitri Patterson was covering Anthony Armstrong. McNabb took his time before throwing the ball to Anthony. While Anthony and Patterson fought to catch the ball, Patterson lost his footing
and tumbled. Anthony only barely held on and kept running for the end zone until he was pushed out of bounds by Kurt Coleman on the five yard line. McNabb then scored his second touchdown of the game with a 6 yard pass to Keiland Williams.
Washington’s success on the offense didn’t last long. Less than five minutes after scoring the touchdown, McNabb was intercepted for the second time on the 28 yard line. The intended target was Joey Galloway but Dimitri Patterson got to the ball first. From
the 28 yard line, Michael Vicks closed in on the end zone with a 21 yard rush. Washington’s defence opened left a gap through the middle which Vick exploited. The quarterback was pushed out of bound on the 7 yard line. Vick finished the drive with a 7 yard
rush. The quarterback veered to the right when he couldn’t find a receiver open and ran into the end zone, even made it look easy.
Even with just three minutes remaining, Eagles not only foiled Washington’s offense, they did that quickly enough to have time to score again. Washington’s offense was stopped after just 9 yards on the 29 yard line forcing the Redskins to punt. Philadelphia
started their drive on the 37 yard line and Vick took them down to Washington’s 36 yard line in just one play. LeSean McCoy and Vick tried to make it ten yards in the next three down but were unable to do so. The only way to salvage the drive was to attempt
the field goal. David Akers attempted the 48 yard field goal and it was good.
By the end of first half, Eagles led the Redskins with 45 points against 14.
