NFL fines Rogers for gun charge
Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers was fined by the NFL on Tuesday for carrying a loaded gun into an airport.
The NFL could have suspended the 10-year veteran but decided to take a more lenient approach with Rogers. However, the 31-year-old wasn’t sure if would have preferred a suspension.
"How's it better? Well, I'm still losing money. I don't play for free,” Rogers laughed when asked about the fine.
Rogers will be fined for one game costing him $400,000 of his $6.9million salary for this season. The nose tackle was caught with a semiautomatic handgun in his hand luggage at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland in April.
Rogers agreed to a deal with prosecutors where he was to attend a diversion programme to avoid trial on the gun charge. If he completes the programme the felony gun charge will be dropped.
"I'll be straight whatever happens. I always wanted to play, that was never the question,” Rogers said
The 31-year-old hasn’t practiced at all this summer due to a leg injury which ended his season after 11 games last year.
Rogers was praised by police earlier in this year after he helped police apprehend a motorist who was allegedly driving under the influence.
