NFL fines Saints RB Pierre Thomas $12,500 for celebration - NFL News
The National Football League is very strict with players breaking its uniform policy and even some Christmas cheer cannot save players from having a fine notice stamped on their lockers as New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas found out.
The New Orleans Saints were playing against their fierce rivals Atlanta Falcons on Monday December 26th and the running back took to the field wearing red and green tape on his arms to celebrate Christmas. The colours did not match the Saints Black and Gold
uniform and the National Football League decided that the actions deserved a fine of $ 5000.
However, that is not where they ended fining Thomas. The running back celebrated scoring a touchdown in the same match by placing a bow on the football and handing the ball over to a fan he saw in the stands. The celebration was deemed illegal and another
fine totalling $ 7,500 was also given to the running back.
A notice placed on the player’s locker with a red bow gave Thomas the deadline to submit the total of $ 12,500 in fines to the National Football League for his actions.
Thomas however, is not concerned with the fines and is happy that he gave one fan a Christmas she will never forget. Thomas saw the woman wearing a Saints Jersey and figured that she deserved the ball with which he scored the touchdown.
“That’s something I wanted to do,” Thomas said. “I heard she was very happy and very grateful for it. I’m just happy I could make somebody’s Christmas and the New Orleans Saints game enjoyable, too, to watch.”
“It was an expensive bow I just gave out.”
The fines have triggered an angry reaction from Saints fans against the National Football League for their attitude towards the holidays and the decision to fine Thomas has been branded ridiculous. This is not the only time that the National Football League
dubbed the “No Fun League” by exasperated fans has made seemingly ridiculous decisions about players celebrations.
The Saints were already furious with charges from some quarters in the media and Falcons players that their team ran up the score in last week’s game just for quarterback Drew Brees to break the record for the highest number of passing yards covered. Brees
broke NFL legend Dan Marino’s record for the highest passing yards in a season, the record had stood for 27 years before Brees managed the feat against the Saints.
