NFL highlights, Giants’ costly mistakes result in an Eagles’ victory
The Philadelphia Eagles may not look as spectacular as they did in last week’s 59-28 win over the Washington Redskins, but they were still good.
Not scrumptious good, but still, good. At least they got the job done.
Michael Vick is now up 2-0 over both of the Manning brothers, having defeated Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts two weeks ago, and Eli Manning and the New York Giants this week, 27-17.
The Eagles blew a 13 point lead, causing the Giants to be up by one in the beginning of the fourth, but then got the lead back with LeSean McCoy running 50 yards for a TD, followed by a 2-point conversion, and a 30 yard FG to put the win out of the reach
of the Giants.
Manning threw 2 TD passes in Sunday’s game to come back from a 13 point deficit, but a costly fumble by him cost New York the game.
They had a fumble earlier in the game as well, which was overturned after officials reviewed the replays. The second time, they weren’t so lucky.
"You're trying to get as much yardage as you can get," Manning said. "You come to the point where you can't slow down, and you want to get down as fast as you can. I knew no one hit me. I hoped there was an arm or a leg that touched me".
It was hard for the Giants to lose their second game in two weeks, after being embarrassed by the 3-7 Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys had had their worst start in years, and came back to defeat the Giants after acquiring a new head coach.
"This was a very important game to battle through when a team is coming after you," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "You have to fight and he [Vick] did. That's really what we haven't seen, and he battled his tail off".
After missing two seasons due to incarceration in a federal prison, Vick came back to play sparingly last season. He then missed a month this season due to a ribcage injury, but when Vick came back, boy, did he come back.
In his first game after his injury, the Eagles defeated the Colts. In his second game, last week against the Redskins, the Eagles scored on each of their initial five possessions, as well as TDs in five opening drives this season. In the game against Washington,
Vick became the first player in NFL history to record 300 passing yards (with 333), 50 rushing yards (80), four passing TDs, and two rushing TDs in a single game.
The Eagles had a slow start in the beginning of their game against the Giants, but eventually woke up after Vick ran 4 yards for a TD.
McCoy ran for a total of 111 yards, while kicker David Akers made four field goals in the win, extending their winning streak to three games.
However, every good thing comes at a price. During the kickoff of the second half, Eagles defensive back Ellis Hobbs suffered a neck injury and had to be removed from the field on a stretcher after taking a hit to the helmet. It was a grim scene at Lincoln
Financial Field, with Hobbs unconscious on the field for 11 minutes. Both teams’ players looked on and the crowd was silent. This same scene has occurred in the Eagles’ last two games at home. Hobbs’ return is questionable.
Vick also made his first turnover of the season, as a result of being sacked by Justin Tuck.
The Eagles don’t resemble the same team that crushed the Redskins and set multiple records in the process. Two TD passes were dropped, forcing them to settle for FGs, one of which was blocked.
But Vick came through when they needed it the most, resulting in the Eagles winning in their last five clashes with the Giants.
"Defense played well enough for us to win", Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "Our careless disregard for the ball, again, cost us a game".
The 6-4 Giants will play the equally matched 6-4 Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, while the 7-3 Eagles will have a difficult game against the 7-3 Chicago Bears.
