NFL news: Cam Newton hires Bus Cook as agent
Cam Newton, winner of the Heisman Trophy and possibly the number one overall draft pick, has hired Bus Cook as his agent to represent him in the National Football League Draft.
The standout Auburn University quarterback decided to forego his senior season at the university to participate in the 2011 NFL Draft, where he will be represented by Cook and Perennial Sports and Entertainment, which is based in Washington, D.C.
Chief Executive Officer of Perennial, Lamell McMorris, confirmed the rumours of the deal on Friday. Cook is also an agent for Brett Favre, former quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.
Meanwhile, Jay Jacobs, athletic director at Auburn said that Cecil Newton, Cam’s father, did not violate the agreement that he had with the university about his attendance at the Bowl Championship Series Game recently.
The Tigers won the national title in 2010-11 led by Newton, and also received the Manning, Davey O’Brien, Maxwell and Heisman awards.
There was also some controversy recently when reports surfaced that Cecil Newton sought a pay-to-play deal when Mississippi State’s recruiters came looking for Cam to play at the University. Because of the incident, Cecil Newton had restricted access to
Auburn’s athletic program.
That also included the Championship Game on 10 January, 2011 which Cecil Newton was not allowed to attend. However, after the game, Cam was seen climbing the stands, ascending the stairs to embrace his father.
Jacobs told a local newspaper that Cecil Newton did not violate their agreement.
“My understanding is he actually came in after the game was over for the celebration,” Jacobs told the newspaper. “Now, I haven't spoken to Mr. Newton. But based on what his attorney said, that's my understanding. As far as I'm concerned, he didn't go against
anything we mutually agreed upon.”
George Lawson, Cecil Newton’s lawyer, said that the father of the star quarterback watched the game from another location and then went to find his son as the stadium when it was over. He did not know where Cecil Newton watched the game.
“I would imagine, just like at our place, when the game is over the door is open and there you go,” Jacobs said Thursday. “I don't have any idea.”
Round one of the 2011 NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, 28 April, 2011; round two and three on Friday, 29 April and rounds four through seven on Saturday, 30 April at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
