NFL player Kenny Mckinley found dead
In what is an apparent suicide Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his home on Monday afternoon.
Police were called to McKinley’s home at 3.35pm local time and found his body in the second-floor master bedroom according to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson. Robinson said detectives at the scene believed the 23-year-old was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Sheriff also said police were alerted by a female friend of McKinley's who discovered the body after returning from a favour with his child.
"It's still part of our investigation and probably nothing we'll talk about right now," Robinson said when asked about a suicide note.
"Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley. He was part of the Broncos' family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny's family and friends,” team owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement.
McKinley’s death isn’t the first tragedy to fall upon the Broncos in recent years. Cornerback Darrent Williams was shot dead in a drive-by shooting on New Year's Day 2007 and then three months later running back Damien Nash collapsed and died after a charity basketball game in St Louis.
"Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room. This is a tragic loss for our football team, and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” head coach Josh McDaniels said.
McKinley was in his second year as a pro in the NFL, he was the injured reserve list this season with a knee injury. Last season he played in eight games with seven kick returns for 158 yards.
